Music and experimental fashion shared the same setting
The market’s history page connects the area’s changing style to its music scene. It points to gigs at Dingwalls and the Roundhouse as part of the arrival of rock and punk in Camden’s cultural mix, and describes young designers selling experimental looks as mods, rockers, punks and bohemians gathered around the market. That account helps explain why Camden is associated with more than one subculture: its image developed through overlapping scenes rather than a single dress code.
The market’s official site describes it as “A diverse community of creative sellers, street food traders and independent stores next to the Regent’s Canal.” That description captures a present-day commercial and social mix as much as a fashion destination.

Is Camden still worth visiting for alternative clothes?
Yes, if you want to browse market stalls and shops for vintage or alternative-style clothing as part of a wider Camden visit. Visit London highlights vintage fashion, and Camden Market’s account ties the area’s alternative looks to its trading and music culture. But neither source establishes that every stall specializes in punk or goth clothing, or that prices, stock and authenticity are consistent. Treat the market as a place to explore and compare rather than a guaranteed specialist shop.
Camden is also not frozen in the era that made its punk reputation. A Camden Council study of Camden Town describes cultural associations that include punk, goth, new wave, Britpop and indie, while noting that creative-economy activity has weakened in recent decades. The council also describes a wider visitor-oriented offer spanning retail, food, drink, leisure and venues. That broader context is important: the subcultural history remains part of Camden’s identity, but the area people visit now is a changing commercial district.

Camden’s place in London’s market culture
Camden is one part of a larger market landscape, not a synonym for all London street trading. The London Borough of Camden says its borough has at least 19 regular markets and that more than 4,000 people are employed by its markets; the council page does not state a measurement year for those figures. Camden Town’s particular appeal lies in the way its market, music associations and alternative fashion history meet in one visitor district.
