Mehak Jamal’s Lōal Kashmir: Love and Longing in a Torn Land brings intimate relationships into view alongside conflict, curfews and interrupted communication. But a central question raised by Scroll’s review is whether the book gives enough context to show how romance and longing take shape within Kashmir’s wider social fabric. That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus—and it sits beside praise for making lesser-explored, often taboo relationships visible.
What kind of book is Lōal Kashmir?
Jamal’s 2025 debut is a collection of love stories set in the Kashmir Valley against the backdrop of conflict. Hindustan Times describes it as sixteen real-life narratives arranged in three chronological sections: Ōtrü, covering the 1990s; Rath, the 2000s; and Az, 2019 onward. Google Books lists the Fourth Estate India edition at 364 pages. Those details describe the cited edition and review; they do not make the collection a representative account of relationships across Kashmir.
The stories place private relationships amid public pressures and practical obstacles. Reviews point to family expectations, curfews, crackdowns, borders and communication disruptions, including a relationship affected by the 2019 communications blackout. Other examples include a love letter, an intercommunity relationship and a cross-border marriage. These are particular narratives, not evidence of how common any relationship or experience is.
What does the criticism about social context mean?
Scroll’s review headline argues that the book does little to contextualise romantic love within Kashmir’s social fabric. The underlying question is whether ideas such as “romance,” “platonic love” and “longing” are sufficiently grounded in the social and cultural circumstances of the people whose stories are told. Without that grounding, an outside reader may understand the emotional stakes of a story yet have less help understanding what those feelings mean in the characters’ own setting.

This is a critique of the book’s framing, not a conclusion about Kashmiri society or a claim that one account could represent it. The available reviews also raise distinct questions: whose relationships are recorded, how political events shape them, and how vividly the setting is rendered. Mint, for example, praises the narratives’ emotional intensity while wishing the descriptions of place were stronger.
What the book sets out to document
In an August 2025 interview with Scroll, Jamal said she wanted to document life and love in Kashmir because she had found few accounts of either. She described the project as a way to make these stories undeniable. Hindustan Times presents the collection as both an account of relationships and a book about Kashmir and conflict; Mint and The Indian Express also discuss the intersection of intimate life and political conditions.

Jamal also described the care and difficulty involved in gathering accounts. She said she collected most of them around 2020–21, offered contributors the option of anonymity, and later had some people withdraw their stories amid concerns about surveillance or censorship. As publication approached, she said, she selected other accounts and interviewed additional people. These details are Jamal’s description of her process, not an independently established measure of contributor experience.

- As a record of individual lives: The narratives bring experiences of love and separation into view amid conflict and everyday constraints.
- As a portrait of the whole region: The collection should not be treated as a survey of social norms or the prevalence of particular relationship types.
- As a work of context: Scroll’s criticism invites readers to consider how much cultural and social framing accompanies the emotional stories; other reviewers emphasize their intensity and the political setting.
- As a depiction of place: Mint’s reservation about place description is separate from the question of whether the relationships themselves are compelling.
The most useful assessment, then, holds two ideas together: documenting intimate stories in a setting where contributors may have concerns about exposure can matter, and readers can still ask whether the book sufficiently explains the social world around those stories.
