Liza Minnelli is the daughter of performer Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli. She has three half-siblings: Lorna and Joey Luft, through Garland’s marriage to producer Sidney Luft, and Christiane Nina Minnelli, through her father’s later marriage to Georgette Magnani.
Who were Liza Minnelli’s parents?
Minnelli’s mother was actor and singer Judy Garland, and her father was film director Vincente Minnelli. PBS’s American Masters biography identifies them as her parents and says she was born in Los Angeles. Their careers placed her in a family shaped by both performance and filmmaking.
PBS also describes Minnelli as growing up in the public eye as the daughter of two prominent artists. That background is part of her story, but her family connections do not define the full extent of her own career.
Who are Liza Minnelli’s three siblings?
All three are half-siblings, not full siblings. Lorna and Joey share Garland as their mother; Christiane Nina shares Vincente Minnelli as her father.

| Sibling | Relationship to Liza | Parents |

| Joey Luft | Maternal half-brother | Judy Garland and producer Sidney Luft |
| Christiane Nina Minnelli | Paternal half-sister | Vincente Minnelli and Georgette Magnani |
Lorna and Joey Luft
Lorna and Joey are Garland’s children with producer Sidney Luft, making them Liza’s maternal half-sister and half-brother. Liza’s official family album page names Lorna and Joey among her siblings, and Lorna has also spoken publicly about their shared family.
Christiane Nina Minnelli
Christiane Nina is Liza’s paternal half-sister, from Vincente Minnelli’s later marriage to Georgette Magnani. In a 2008 Guardian profile, Liza called her “Tina Nina.” The profile spells her name “Christiane Nina”; another secondary biographical result uses “Christiana Nina,” so the spelling is not uniform across the available accounts.
How the family branches fit together
- Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli were Liza Minnelli’s parents.
- Garland and Sidney Luft were the parents of Lorna and Joey, Liza’s maternal half-siblings.
- Vincente Minnelli and Georgette Magnani were the parents of Christiane Nina, Liza’s paternal half-sister.
The difference between “maternal” and “paternal” is simply which parent the siblings share: Lorna and Joey share Liza’s mother, while Christiane shares her father.
What Minnelli has said about her parents’ household
In a Good Morning America interview with Robin Roberts, reported March 10, 2026, Minnelli described the atmosphere at home this way: “The humor was everywhere, everywhere.” The remark offers a glimpse of how she remembers her parents’ household, rather than a complete account of family life.

Where to learn more about the family
The PBS American Masters biography provides background on Minnelli’s parentage and childhood. Her official family album names her parents, Lorna and Joey. The Guardian profile supplies the account of Christiane Nina and the “Tina Nina” nickname; a separate Guardian interview with Lorna Luft corroborates her relationship to Liza.
PBS also has an American Masters documentary page about Minnelli. The page is a documentary resource; it does not establish current availability on a particular streaming service.
