Little St. James is a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands associated with Jeffrey Epstein’s residence and with allegations in a Virgin Islands civil enforcement case. The government said many of Epstein’s crimes occurred there; a civil complaint alleged trafficking and sexual abuse on the island. Those allegations must be distinguished from the 2022 civil settlement, which resolved claims without constituting a criminal conviction or adjudicating every allegation.
What happened on Little St. James?
The U.S. Virgin Islands’ civil complaint described Little St. James as part of a network of properties and entities Epstein used to carry out and conceal criminal conduct. It alleged trafficking and sexual abuse there. The Virgin Islands Department of Justice later said many of Epstein’s crimes occurred on the island. These are statements by the government and allegations in a civil case—not a finding that every detail in the complaint was proven at trial. The court filing should therefore be read as a source for what the government alleged, not as a verdict.

The reviewed official material does not establish a reliable island-specific count of victims. The government’s 2022 announcement separately referred to a compensation program that awarded nearly $125 million to approximately 150 women, but that figure concerns the broader program, not a confirmed count of people abused on Little St. James. The settlement announcement does not support assigning that total to the island.
When did Epstein acquire the island?
A filing in the Virgin Islands’ litigation against JPMorgan describes L.S.J., LLC as acquiring Little St. James by warranty deed dated April 27, 1998. That is the filing’s account of the acquisition and corporate ownership chain. The filing also sets out allegations about how Epstein used Virgin Islands entities and properties; those claims should not be confused with independently adjudicated findings.

What did the 2022 settlement require?
On November 30, 2022, the Virgin Islands Department of Justice announced a civil settlement with Epstein’s estate, co-executors Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, and ten entities created by Epstein. The government said it had filed its enforcement action in 2020 under territorial laws concerning criminal enterprises, sex trafficking, child exploitation, and fraud. The settlement terms included:
- $105 million in cash to the Virgin Islands.
- Half of the proceeds from the sale of Little St. James, with the government stating that the money would go to a trust supporting programs and services for Virgin Islands residents who were victims of sexual assault, trafficking, sexual misconduct, and child sexual abuse.
- The estate’s agreement to sell Little St. James and Great St. James to independent third parties, wind down business operations in the territory, and provide documents supporting continuing government investigations.
- The return of more than $80 million in economic development tax benefits and $450,000 for environmental remediation around Great St. James.
These were civil settlement commitments announced by the government, not criminal sentences. The settlement release describes what the parties agreed to; it does not, by itself, certify the details of a later transfer of title. The government’s announcement contains the terms and intended use of the island-sale proceeds.

Who owns Little St. James now?
LegalClarity reports that Stephen Deckoff’s investment vehicle bought Little St. James and Great St. James in May 2023 for $60 million. That is secondary-source reporting, not a current title certification. The sources cited here do not establish the present owner from an official Virgin Islands land record or verify whether redevelopment has proceeded. LegalClarity’s account of the sale should be understood with those limits.

The Department of Justice’s Epstein Library hosts court records and other disclosures. The DOJ says released records include redactions intended to protect victims and other private individuals. A person’s name appearing in a file does not, on its own, establish criminal conduct, and an allegation in a filing is not proof that it was adjudicated. The DOJ disclosures page explains the collection and its privacy protections.

For Little St. James, keep three categories distinct: what a civil complaint alleged, what the government announced as settlement terms, and what a secondary source reports about the subsequent sale. That distinction preserves the documented account without treating allegations or a civil resolution as a criminal conviction.
