Celebrity Net Worth estimates Little Richard’s net worth at $40 million at the time of his death in 2020. That is a third-party estimate—not a verified probate total or a record of what his beneficiaries received. The estimate includes a valuation for his music catalog and publishing rights, whose management and distribution later became part of probate litigation.
How much was Little Richard worth when he died?
Celebrity Net Worth puts Little Richard’s net worth at $40 million at the time of his death in 2020. The site says its figures are estimates unless otherwise indicated, and says this figure includes estimated value for his catalog and publishing rights. It does not provide an estate inventory or a valuation method sufficient to establish the amount as an audited accounting. Celebrity Net Worth’s estimate should therefore be described as an estimate, not as a confirmed estate value.
Does the $40 million figure represent his probate estate?
Not on the evidence available here. Net worth estimates and probate totals are different measures: an estimate may assign a value to rights and other assets, while an estate accounting concerns assets, debts, rights, and beneficiary interests handled through probate. A 2024 account by Loeb & Loeb, the law firm representing appellees in the dispute, describes Tennessee litigation over the management and distribution of Richard Wayne Penniman’s intellectual property and publicity rights. It says a proposed sale of those rights was withdrawn after a beneficiary dispute and that the appellate court affirmed a circuit-court judgment. The account does not give a complete estate valuation. Loeb & Loeb’s case account is counsel’s description of the litigation, not a published estate inventory.
No independently verified total for Penniman’s estate is established by these sources, and the $40 million estimate cannot show how much any individual beneficiary received.

What contributed to Little Richard’s wealth and legacy?
A landmark run of recordings
Richard Wayne Penniman, known as Little Richard, was born in Macon, Georgia, on December 5, 1932, and died in Tullahoma, Tennessee, on May 9, 2020, aged 87. The Television Academy describes his mid-1950s work as influential in the development of rock and roll, soul, and funk. The Television Academy’s biography records those life details and his influence.
His breakthrough recordings included “Tutti Frutti,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Jenny Jenny,” “Keep a Knockin’,” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly.” “Tutti Frutti” reached No. 2 on the national R&B chart and No. 17 on the pop chart in early 1956, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary. The obituary also describes music that crossed racial boundaries in the popular market, while noting that Richard later said he had not received appropriate credit or financial rewards. Quoting a 2004 Dallas Morning News interview, the newspaper reported Richard’s words: “The industry back then didn’t allow me to get the credit, because I was black and the kids who were buying my records were white.”

What the estimate can—and cannot—tell readers
- It can: show that one celebrity-wealth publisher estimated Penniman’s net worth at $40 million at death, including estimated catalog and publishing-rights value.
- It cannot: verify the value of the probate estate, establish a complete accounting of assets and debts, or identify distributions to beneficiaries.
- It does not settle: how much income or financial benefit particular recordings or rights generated for Penniman or his estate over time.
