She was 70. Her sister, Duffy Hurwin, confirmed her death. Lyon’s legacy reached beyond winning the first Women’s World Pro Bodybuilding Championship: she presented strength as an artistic statement and challenged narrow ideas about femininity through photography, performance and public advocacy.
How Lyon became a bodybuilding pioneer
Born Lisa Robin Lyon in Los Angeles on May 13, 1953, she studied ballet, flamenco and jazz dance before earning a bachelor’s degree in ethnic arts and interdisciplinary studies at UCLA in 1974. She also competed in kendo, the Japanese martial art. In the mid-1970s, she began weight training to build upper-body strength.
After meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lyon began training at Gold’s Gym in Santa Monica, reportedly working out six days a week. Her first public bodybuilding appearance came in 1978. The following year, at 26, she won the inaugural Women’s World Pro Bodybuilding Championship. She never competed again.
Her brief competitive career was only one part of her influence. Lyon became an advocate for women’s bodybuilding, appeared in magazines and on television, and performed in galleries and museums. Her sister recalled that Lyon liked to pursue things few others did, including activities uncommon for women at the time.

Strength, femininity and the Playboy appearance
Lyon treated her physique and public image as a creative project as well as an athletic achievement. She described the ideal she sought as “neither masculine nor feminine, but feline,” according to her obituary in The Washington Post.
She posed for Playboy in 1980, a deliberate choice to reach readers beyond muscle magazines. The Washington Post reported that Lyon later said she wanted to introduce those readers to a different idea of femininity. In her account, she contrasted the popular images of women in earlier decades with what she saw as a growing acceptance of health and strength. That was Lyon’s reading of changing ideals, not a universal description of how women were represented or understood.

She also spoke about the assumptions she encountered at Gold’s Gym. In a 1981 interview cited by the Post, Lyon said some men presumed she had come to meet men rather than lift weights, while others watched her sexually. Her account illustrates the scrutiny that accompanied her decision to occupy a space and pursue a sport then unusual for women.
From bodybuilding to photography, books and film
Lyon met photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in 1980. He made dozens of portraits of her, published in magazines and gathered in the 1983 photography book Lady: Lisa Lyon, which included an introduction by Bruce Chatwin. She also modeled for photographers including Marcus Leatherdale and Helmut Newton.

In 1981, Lyon and writer and photographer Douglas Kent Hall co-authored Lisa Lyon’s Body Magic, an instructional book on training. It documents her approach in its historical context; readers should not treat it as current exercise guidance without reviewing it against present-day advice.
Her work extended to acting and advertising. She appeared in the 1986 horror comedy Vamp and took part in Japanese advertising campaigns. In 2000, she was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame.

Why Lisa Lyon’s legacy crossed disciplines
Lyon’s career connected competitive bodybuilding with performance, fashion and art photography. She used her visibility to make women’s muscularity part of a broader conversation about self-presentation and femininity, rather than limiting her public identity to a championship title. Her sister’s recollection—that Lyon pursued what others did not—captures the unconventional path that ran from dance and kendo to bodybuilding and the camera.
