For a self-managed 24/7 YouTube livestream, either Linode (Akamai Cloud) or DigitalOcean can host the streaming process. The available evidence does not establish a reliability winner. Choose by comparing equivalent virtual machines in your intended region, sustained compute and network needs, included outbound transfer, overage rates, and the recovery system you will operate.
What matters most for a continuous stream
A server sends the encoded video feed continuously, so the monthly bill depends on more than the virtual machine’s headline price. Start with the stream’s actual bitrate and expected runtime, then compare the resulting outbound traffic with the selected plan’s allowance and billing rules. Also account for whether the server only relays a pre-encoded feed or must encode, transcode, add overlays, record locally, or run automation.
- Outbound transfer: Check included transfer, pooling rules, and any regional excess rate.
- Compute and memory: Size the virtual machine for the streaming process and any additional workload; an undersized machine can degrade or error under load.
- Network throughput: Check documented limits for the specific plan and test the route to the YouTube ingest destination you intend to use.
- Operations: Arrange process and network monitoring, alerts, and restart or recovery procedures. A virtual machine’s availability is not the same as an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
- Region and billing: Compare the same geography and configuration. Pricing and transfer terms can vary by region and billing model.

The DigitalOcean starting price and transfer allowance were listed on its public pricing page as accessed 4 October 2026. DigitalOcean v5 resource pricing can vary with configured resources and monthly hours, and its bundled and v5 billing rules differ. Linode pricing and transfer overage are region-sensitive. Recheck both providers’ current terms before committing to a configuration.
Estimate the stream’s outbound transfer
Use the bitrate of the feed leaving the server—not just the resolution of the source file—and the number of hours it will run. As a planning approximation, one continuous 1 Mbps stream sends about 10.8 GB of video payload per 30-day month, before protocol overhead. For example, at 6 Mbps, multiply 10.8 by 6: roughly 64.8 GB per 30-day month. Actual provider accounting may use GiB rather than GB, and protocol overhead or reconnects can increase usage.

- Multiply Mbps by 10.8 for an approximate GB figure per 30-day month of continuous streaming. Scale down for planned downtime or up for higher runtime.
- Compare the estimate with the selected plan’s included outbound transfer, team or account pooling rules, and regional overage terms.
- Check whether the selected VM’s throughput limit supports the sustained upload rate, then test the route to the intended YouTube ingest destination.
This estimate covers the outgoing stream only. Other workloads on the same account or billing pool can consume transfer too, so leave room rather than selecting a plan exactly at the estimate.
Choose an equivalent VM before comparing prices
There is no sound price/performance comparison until both options are matched for region, CPU type, memory, storage, network limits, and billing basis. DigitalOcean offers shared and dedicated CPU Droplet families; its documentation warns that an undersized VM can degrade or error under load. For Linode, check the current plan details in the intended region rather than treating a rate from another data center as universal.

If the host only forwards an already encoded feed, its workload differs from one that encodes or transcodes video. Measure CPU and memory under the real setup, including overlays, playlists or automation, and local recording if used. If encoding is required, test the chosen configuration at the intended resolution and frame rate before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Plan for failures, not just server selection
Neither provider comparison establishes that a VM will keep a YouTube broadcast uninterrupted. A 24/7 setup requires an operator to detect and respond to failures across the process, server, network path, and YouTube ingest.

- Alert on process exits, sustained loss of outbound traffic, and server or network problems.
- Configure and test a process restart strategy; decide what happens if the VM itself becomes unavailable.
- Test recovery against the selected YouTube ingest destination and confirm the broadcast resumes as intended.
- Keep a record of the stream settings, key handling, and recovery steps so an operator can act quickly.
How to make the choice
- Pick the region. Choose where the server should run, then compare provider pricing, transfer terms, and network limits for that location.
- Define the workload. Record the outbound bitrate and whether the VM must encode, transcode, add overlays, record, or automate playback.
- Calculate transfer. Estimate monthly outbound usage from bitrate and runtime, then compare it with the plan allowance and overage policy.
- Match server resources. Compare VM configurations with equivalent CPU, memory, and relevant network capability, not just starting prices.
- Test and monitor. Validate sustained output to the intended YouTube ingest destination and put failure alerts and restart procedures in place.
Choose DigitalOcean if its specific Droplet configuration, allowance, and regional price fit your workload and its documented limits. Choose Linode if its current regional compute and transfer terms fit better. The available provider facts do not support declaring either one the more reliable host for a particular broadcast.
