For a self-managed cloud server that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, Vultr is the clearest documented Linode alternative in the available provider guides. It publishes an Ubuntu workflow using OBS Studio and FFmpeg, plus a separate guide to a remote OBS environment. That makes Vultr a concrete option to evaluate—not a proven cheapest, fastest, or most reliable provider. Current, comparable pricing and performance evidence for Linode and alternatives is not established here.
If you want a managed service instead of maintaining a server, StreamNeo is another route: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live from the cloud. The right choice depends on whether you want control over a VPS, less server administration, or a service built specifically to loop uploaded videos.
Linode alternatives at a glance
| Option | What it does | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. | Designed for this use case; upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. One flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. |
| Vultr Cloud Compute with OBS or FFmpeg | A self-managed Ubuntu server runs streaming software and sends the video to YouTube Live. | Vultr documents an OBS/FFmpeg setup. You administer the server, software, storage, and stream. |
| Vultr Broadcaster | A remote OBS deployment that can use uploaded media as a source. | Its guide describes media uploads, looping a source, and playing multiple files with a VLC Video Source. Confirm current availability and plan details. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | A managed service that ingests a live RTMP or SRT signal and produces HLS or DASH outputs. | Its documented architecture is not a VPS that takes a prerecorded file and pushes it to YouTube. |
| Amazon IVS | Amazon’s FFmpeg instructions describe sending recorded video to IVS. | The documented destination is IVS, not YouTube Live; the cited guide does not establish it as a direct YouTube substitute. |
For the specific goal of looping uploaded video on YouTube without running your own server, StreamNeo is the most direct fit: it runs in the cloud, accepts uploaded videos or playlists, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. For hands-on control of a general-purpose server, Vultr is the named alternative with a directly documented YouTube workflow.
What to compare before choosing a cloud provider
There is no supported like-for-like price, performance, GPU-availability, or reliability ranking for Linode, Vultr, AWS, or Google Cloud here. Compare providers against your actual stream and operating requirements rather than assuming a winner.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Total cost: Estimate the hours streamed and check the current server price, included outbound transfer, and overage charges. These terms can matter more for a continuous stream than the headline compute price.
- Compute: Match CPU or GPU capacity to the resolution, frame rate, and encoding method. A simple FFmpeg stream and a graphical OBS desktop can have very different resource needs.
- Storage and uploads: Check whether source videos persist on the server, how much storage is included, and how you will upload large files.
- Network route: Consider server region and its route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. No comparable regional performance measurements are established for these providers.
- Administration: Decide whether you can handle OS updates, software installation, stream configuration, monitoring, and recovery after a reboot or failure. Remote desktop access matters if you plan to use OBS’s graphical interface.
Vultr’s documented self-managed OBS/FFmpeg workflow
Vultr’s Ubuntu guide, updated in 2025, gives an example server baseline of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. These are the guide’s prerequisites for its example, not universal minimums for YouTube streaming. The guide recommends 720p when the server has at least 2 vCPUs and notes that higher resolution or frame rate needs more processing power. Check the provider’s current specifications and transfer terms before deploying.
- Deploy an Ubuntu server. Choose a region and plan that meet your compute, storage, and transfer needs. Keep in mind that a graphical OBS setup and a headless FFmpeg workflow are not interchangeable in resource requirements.
- Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg. Follow Vultr’s current Ubuntu setup instructions for the software and any required desktop or remote-access components.
- Create a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public repository.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service and enter the stream key. Set output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your server’s capacity.
- Add the prerecorded video. Add the media file as a source in OBS, or configure FFmpeg to read the file and publish it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Set looping deliberately if the video should repeat; confirm the file’s audio and video play correctly before relying on an unattended stream.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Check the YouTube preview and stream status, then monitor server CPU use and bandwidth as Vultr advises. A stream that starts successfully can still stall or drop later if the instance is overloaded or the network path fails.
Encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its Help page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 and supports up to 60 fps. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings page for current codec, bitrate, and resolution recommendations before configuring a stream, because those requirements can change.

YouTube also supports HLS ingest, but it has higher latency than RTMP because video is transmitted in segments. Use HLS only when your encoder workflow calls for it; it is not automatically a better choice for a prerecorded loop.
Copyright and channel policy
A technically valid encoder stream does not grant the right to broadcast its contents. Make sure you have the necessary rights or licenses for every video, music track, image, and other material in the stream. YouTube’s copyright enforcement can affect a live broadcast and the channel. Also consider whether repeatedly streaming material adds original value for viewers: technical availability is separate from YouTube’s monetization and reused-content rules. Review YouTube’s current policies and use the copyright safety checklist before streaming content whose rights or originality are uncertain.

Vultr Broadcaster and other managed architectures
Vultr Broadcaster
Vultr’s remote Broadcaster guide covers uploading media files and adding one as an OBS source. It also describes looping a source and playing multiple files through a VLC Video Source. This may reduce the initial work of assembling a remote OBS environment, but it is still important to confirm current product availability, plan limits, resource capacity, and transfer terms before choosing it.
Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google documents a managed transcoding service that accepts a live RTMP or SRT input and produces HLS or DASH outputs. That is a different architecture from uploading a prerecorded file to a VPS and having OBS or FFmpeg publish it to YouTube. Google’s documentation gives input recommendations of 8 Mbps for 720p at 25/30 fps and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50/60 fps; these figures are for its managed service’s input streams, not recommended YouTube encoder settings.

Amazon IVS
Amazon’s instructions include an FFmpeg workflow for streaming recorded video to IVS. The documented destination is IVS, so that guide alone does not show that IVS is a drop-in service for publishing prerecorded video to YouTube Live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Costs and practical trade-offs
For a VPS, estimate the full operating cost rather than comparing compute prices alone: include outbound transfer, storage, any remote desktop needs, and time spent installing, updating, monitoring, and recovering the stream. A 24/7 stream runs for many more hours than a short broadcast, so confirm how the provider bills sustained compute and network use. The evidence here does not establish current comparable prices or a lowest-cost provider.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a cloud-hosted YouTube stream
- YouTube does not receive video: Check that the stream key is current and belongs to the intended stream, confirm the encoder service and ingest protocol, and verify outbound network access from the server. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream is choppy or the server is overloaded: Check CPU use, bandwidth, and the selected output resolution and frame rate. Reduce output demands or choose more capable resources; Vultr notes that higher resolution and frame rate require more processing power.
- The video plays once and stops: Check the media source’s loop setting or the FFmpeg input/loop configuration. Verify that the source file is accessible after reconnects or reboots.
- The stream ends after a reboot or disconnect: A self-managed VPS workflow requires a way to restart the encoder and confirm it reconnects to YouTube. Test the recovery path before leaving a long stream unattended.
- There is more delay than expected: Confirm whether the encoder is using HLS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments.
