When did Link Wray die?
Wray, born Frederick Lincoln Wray Jr. in Dunn, North Carolina, died in Copenhagen on November 5, 2005. The Associated Press obituary carried by Legacy.com reported that he was 76 and that no cause was given. His wife and son described his heart as “getting tired”; that was their wording, not an official cause of death.
What was Link Wray best known for?
Wray’s defining recording was “Rumble,” a 1958 instrumental whose rough, distorted electric-guitar sound helped make it one of early rock’s most influential records. The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame reports that it entered the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1958, peaked at No. 16, stayed on the chart for 14 weeks and sold more than one million copies.
Wray also recorded “Rawhide” and “Jack the Ripper.” He performed with his brothers early in his career and later billed himself as Link Wray and the Raymen, according to the AP obituary.

Why was “Rumble” important?
Wray pushed guitar distortion into an abrasive, forceful sound, and his use of power chords helped establish a vocabulary later rock guitarists would draw on. The Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board essay on “Rumble” places the instrumental in the history of recorded music, while The Guardian’s obituary describes Wray as an innovator whose influence exceeded his mainstream success.
The Who guitarist Pete Townshend captured that influence in the Guardian obituary: “He is the king; if it hadn’t been for Link Wray and Rumble, I would have never picked up a guitar.”

How did listeners rediscover his music?
Later film placements—including Pulp Fiction and Independence Day—brought renewed attention to Wray’s recordings, the Guardian obituary notes. They offered new audiences a route to music whose stark guitar sound had already shaped rock.
