At both shows, Guster brought the musical’s co-creator, Michael Kooman, and cast members onstage; at the Friday concert, they joined the band for “Hard Times.”
What happened at Guster’s Kennedy Center concerts?
Guster played two concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in March 2025. At both performances, the band welcomed Michael Kooman, co-creator of Finn, and cast members from the musical, whose planned Kennedy Center tour had been canceled. Contemporary accounts reported that the cast joined Guster for “Hard Times” at the Friday show. Source: contemporary reporting Source: Friday concert report
In a later first-person account, Guster frontman Ryan Miller said Kooman and five cast members joined the band onstage. Miller described the appearance as a way to make the band’s position visible while still carrying out the concerts. Miller’s essay in The Atlantic
What is Finn about?
Finn is a children’s musical about a young shark who wants to be a colorful fish. Its creators have said the story can also be read as reflecting the queer experience. The Kennedy Center-sponsored tour was canceled, but the available accounts do not establish that the musical has no future elsewhere. Contemporary reporting Friday concert report Miller’s account

Miller said Guster believed it could make its voice heard most clearly from the Kennedy Center stage. He wrote that the band also wanted to support venue staff, fans who had bought tickets and made travel plans, and the musicians performing with them. Those are Miller’s and the band’s stated reasons, rather than an independent finding about their motives.

Miller framed the challenge as combining a strong performance with an unmistakable but measured expression of disagreement: “Our challenge, beyond putting on an indelible show, was to find a way to make our dissension clear, with dignity and creativity.” Ryan Miller, The Atlantic

Miller wrote that the stage had been made available to Guster by the Kennedy Center’s previous curators and said the band and the Finn participants shared a desire to use it. “That space was given to us by the venue’s previous curators, and we were united in our desire to own it,” he wrote. The performance connected the canceled tour to a live concert without establishing what would happen to Finn afterward. The cited accounts document the cancellation of its Kennedy Center tour, not a permanent end to the musical or a confirmed future production.
