Director Lina Abascal built the short around the people using the phrase and the friendship, identity and community they find through fandom.
What is the Come to Brasil documentary about?
The short centers on four superfans in Rio de Janeiro, each devoted to a different pop star: Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Madonna or Beyoncé. Its subject is not simply celebrity worship. The film looks at how fandom shapes personal identity and brings people together, giving a human context to “Come to Brasil,” a phrase that can seem like a running internet joke to people unfamiliar with its meaning to fans.
The film’s catalog synopsis describes the phrase as a fan rallying cry and presents music as a force that unites people. The stories of the fans make that idea tangible: anticipation for an artist is bound up with the friends and community built around that shared love. How Lina Abascal found the story
Abascal says the idea began with seeing “Come to Brasil” repeatedly in online comments. She wondered whether the people posting it were actually in Brazil and whether it was a meme she had missed. Looking further, she noticed that major musicians could skip Brazil for long stretches. In her interview with Remezcla, she described artists who “don’t tour in Brazil, or they go like once every two decades.”

That observation led her away from a primarily academic examination of the phrase and toward the fans themselves. “I’m less interested in like a more academic analysis and more human-rooted story about the actual passionate people that are saying this and what it means to them,” she told Remezcla, explaining that her perspective in the United States came with more concert options.
Remezcla reports that Lady Gaga announced a concert in Brazil as filming began. That timing gave the story another dimension: what happens after a fan finally sees an artist they have waited years to see? Abascal described the answer as something larger than the event: “the fandom and my friends are part of my identity in my community.” The concert matters, but so does the belonging that persists when it is over.

Fandom as longing, belonging and community
Editor Dri Sommer said that working on the edit made clear the film was about more than pop stars and their fans. In Remezcla’s interview, Sommer described it as a story “about longing and belonging,” and about the way Brazilians create community around a shared love. Her account points to the film’s emotional center: the anticipation is real, but the connections formed along the way can outlast the concert.
Abascal also sees the fans’ intensity as relevant beyond pop music. “Even if you’re not a Gaga fan, Swiftie, I still think that the passion behind these people is relevant to anyone,” she said. The film’s invitation is to recognize a familiar human experience in an unfamiliar online refrain: caring deeply about something, finding others who care too, and making that shared interest part of who you are.

Brazil beyond the internet punchline
The film also raises questions about who gets treated as culturally central. Abascal put it plainly: “the U.S. is not the center of the universe.” Sommer described conversations with Brazilians about “Stray Dog Syndrome”—whether recognition from Americans is still needed, or whether Brazil has outgrown that dependence on outside validation. She also spoke of a shift in how Brazilians see their culture and how widely it is valued.
These are the filmmakers’ perspectives, rather than a claim that every Brazilian fan or artist shares one view. They help explain why the phrase matters in this film: it is not only a plea for a tour stop, but an expression of fans asserting their presence and the value of a community that is easy to overlook from elsewhere.

Production and release details
Remezcla reports that the crew worked across Los Angeles and Brazil and describes the core director, producer, cinematographer and editor team as all female. It also says more than 90% of the filmmakers were Latino; that figure is Remezcla’s account, and the article does not identify an independent audit. The production company Discordia is described there as female-founded and focused on Latin American stories.
Published listings do not agree on the runtime: Remezcla gives 20 minutes, while Plex and Letterboxd list 22 minutes. Release dates also differ by listing and context: Remezcla says the film premiered on Rolling Stone Films on July 16; Plex gives July 7, and Letterboxd lists a July 23 US digital date. Those listings do not establish that the dates describe the same release event.

Where to watch depends on region and current catalog. Plex lists Fubo, while the UK page checked by JustWatch reported no current offer. Check a current listing for your country before relying on a service’s availability.
