Mosi Reeves’ Rolling Stone review finds that Tha Carter VI has flashes of the wit, punchlines, and playful command that made Lil Wayne distinctive, but not enough momentum or purpose to make the album feel like a major statement. The review’s answer to whether Wayne can still remind listeners why he is among rap’s best is yes—but only briefly.
What the review says about Tha Carter VI
In his June 10, 2025, Rolling Stone review, Reeves treats Tha Carter VI as a test of what Wayne’s familiar strengths can still do on a new album. He hears a veteran artist who remains capable of sharp humor and memorable turns of phrase, yet no longer moves with the quickness and invention Reeves associates with Wayne at his peak.
That is a critical judgment about this album, not a consensus verdict on Wayne’s career. Reeves’ main reservation is that its promising moments do not gather into a strong overarching idea. He hears a contented posture where Tha Carter V, by comparison, had more palpable personal stakes.
Which songs Reeves finds most compelling
“Cotton Candy” and Wayne’s playfulness
Reeves points to “Cotton Candy” as one of the album’s most appealing moments, valuing the playful performance. That pleasure in Wayne’s vocal character and humor is central to the review’s case that his old strengths have not disappeared.

“Welcome to Tha Carter” and the punchline
On “Welcome to Tha Carter,” Reeves singles out Wayne’s boast, “I still eat the rappers I heard, they’re appetizers.” It is a compact example of the appetite for comic wordplay that the reviewer misses when the album’s weaker writing takes over.
“Hip-Hop” and sports references
Reeves hears “Hip-Hop” as a strong showcase for Wayne’s basketball and football references. Here, familiar subjects become material for the nimble, reference-rich performance the review hopes the album will sustain.

“Written History” and musical memory
“Written History” opens with audio of Muhammad Ali and frames Wayne through the language of sports legend. Reeves regards the track as another bright moment in an album that reaches for older cultural touchstones.
Other shifts in sound
Reeves also notes “If I Played Guitar,” where Wayne sings over a pop-rock arrangement, and hip-hop references in “Bells,” “Banned from NO,” and “Loki’s Theme.” These examples show the album drawing on different styles and eras; the review’s larger question is whether such moments add up to more than isolated flashes.

Where Reeves thinks the album falls short
The review criticizes “The Days,” “Peanuts 2 N Elephant,” and “Mula Komin’ In” as weak cuts, objecting to their execution or lyrics. Those songs matter to Reeves’ overall judgment because they make the album’s stronger passages feel less like parts of a coherent statement.
Reeves also frames the album against an earlier Wayne: the punchline-heavy, New Orleans-rooted rapper whose catalog, in his view, shifted toward a more pop-facing sound. That career-era contrast is his interpretation, rather than a neutral measure of Wayne’s artistic development.

How “Bein’ Myself” shapes the ending
“Bein’ Myself,” which reunites Wayne with Mannie Fresh, gives the album a theme of self-acceptance. Reeves reads Wayne’s lines—“I can’t be nothing, just me…don’t try to make me someone else”—as a defense of staying himself rather than changing to satisfy critics.
The review grants that there is a case for Wayne’s contentment and security in his legacy. Its closing tension is that accepting an artist as he is does not require finding every new album essential: Reeves suggests that listeners may still prefer the classics.
