Lil Poppa, the stage name of Jacksonville rapper Janarious Wheeler, died on February 18, 2026, at age 25. The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed his death; the cause and manner were initially pending.
What is known about Lil Poppa’s death
CBS Atlanta reported on February 19, 2026, that the Fulton County Medical Examiner had confirmed Wheeler’s death the day before. At the time, the medical examiner had not established a cause or manner of death, and both remained pending, according to CBS Atlanta’s report.
A later account changed what had been publicly reported: TMZ reported on May 19, updated June 5, 2026, that coroner documents it obtained identified a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that toxicology was pending. That description is TMZ’s account of the documents; its report does not make the earlier February status any less accurate for the time it was issued. TMZ’s report did not establish a motive, and none should be inferred.
Who was Lil Poppa?
Wheeler was a Jacksonville, Florida, rapper whose music career began in childhood. He broke through with “Purple Hearts” in 2018, a song that led to an Interscope signing, according to Pitchfork. He later signed with Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group.
