National Geographic’s official descriptions and BBC Studios’ 2022 announcement support ten distinct facts about Life Below Zero and its franchise. They offer a closer look at the original series’ cast and seasons, its production credit, and how two extensions differ. The available official sources do not substantiate 15 separate facts, so this guide sticks to what they establish.
Facts about the original Life Below Zero
1. The series follows residents in remote parts of Alaska
National Geographic describes the original series as following people living in remote corners of Alaska through difficult seasonal conditions. Its official page names Sue Aikens, Eric Salitan, Chip and Agnes Hailstone, and Andy and Kate Bassich as examples of the people featured. National Geographic’s series description is the source for these characterizations.
2. Spring is part of the story, not just winter
The official descriptions include spring, when ice breaks and animals wake, alongside the work of preparing for another winter. The seasonal arc is therefore broader than the show’s wintry title might suggest. National Geographic Television Canada’s show description also emphasizes preparation for the next winter.
3. Sue Aikens’ nearest neighbor is more than 300 miles away
National Geographic states: “The closest neighbor to Sue Aikens is more than 300 miles away.” That detail is specifically about Aikens; it is not a statistic about all the cast or Alaska’s residents generally. National Geographic’s official series page gives the figure.

4. National Geographic describes Eric Salitan as living off hunting and foraging
The network’s description says Salitan subsists solely on what he hunts and forages. This is the official description of one cast member, not a claim about everyone on the series or about remote Alaskans as a group. National Geographic’s cast description supplies the detail.
5. The Hailstones are described as bartering fish for supplies
National Geographic says Chip and Agnes Hailstone catch fish to use as currency when bartering for supplies. The claim refers to the Hailstones’ described practice; the source does not establish that it is a general custom among the communities shown. The official series description provides this account.

7. Adjacent Productions was credited on the original series announcement
The original launch announcement described a series following six Alaskans and named Adjacent Productions as producer for National Geographic Channel. That is the production credit in the launch announcement; it should not be conflated with credits for later installments. BBC Studios’ original-series announcement records the attribution.
