The Associated Press reported on 17 October 2024 that the autopsy found injuries consistent with a three-story fall. That finding supports the account of how Payne was fatally injured; it does not, by itself, explain what led to the fall.
What did toxicology establish?
The AP’s early report said a preliminary toxicology finding indicated cocaine exposure, but cautioned that it did not accurately measure how much was in Payne’s system. On 22 October 2024, the prosecutor’s office said complementary toxicology and histopathology studies were still unfinished.

Those early findings should not be treated as a final causal explanation. The cited reporting does not establish a scientific conclusion that a substance caused Payne to fall. Presence of a substance and proof of why a person fell are different questions.
What happened in the investigation?
The legal posture changed over time. Prosecutors initially reported that five people had been processed under different allegations, including negligent homicide and narcotics supply. These were allegations, not convictions, and the people involved did not all face the same accusation.

In its 26 March 2026 account, the Buenos Aires city judiciary said the investigation was complete and reported that prosecutors saw no causal link between the accused suppliers’ conduct and Payne’s death. The judge ordered their release subject to conditions and said the prosecution could appeal. This is the judiciary’s account of the hearing and the prosecution’s position; it is not an independent medical determination or a ruling that resolves every question about the death.
The latest located update is dated 26 March 2026. It describes a procedural status at that time, not a final judgment on the allegations.
