Letterboxd’s 2022 Year in Review is no longer “almost here”: the public roundup was published on January 6, 2023. It recaps films and member activity across the platform, while each member’s personal annual summary is a separate feature with its own diary-entry requirements.
What Letterboxd’s 2022 Year in Review includes
The public 2022 Year in Review is Letterboxd’s eleventh annual community roundup. It covers highest-rated and popular films, genres and categories, films by women directors, popular reviews and lists, viewing trends, repeat watches, divisive titles, films that were anticipated, and recommendations for 2023. It also includes an in memoriam section and most-watched cast and crew.
Letterboxd reported the following totals for activity on its platform during 2022. These are publisher-reported figures, not independently audited estimates:
| Letterboxd-reported 2022 activity | Total |
|---|---|
| Films marked watched | 343,865,913 |

Letterboxd also said that 22% of films watched in 2022 were released that year. In its 50 highest-rated films overall, eight were directed by women; the roundup compares that with nine the previous year and sixteen in 2020.

Which films and filmmakers led the 2022 results?
Everything Everywhere All at Once was Letterboxd’s highest-rated film of 2022. Kadaisi Vivasayi and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On placed second and third in the journal’s top three. Meanwhile, The Batman was both the most popular film and the most obsessively rewatched, according to the Letterboxd Journal retrospective.
Other member-activity rankings named Cate Blanchett the most-watched actress, Willem Dafoe the most-watched actor for a second year running, Matt Reeves the most-watched director, and Olivia Wilde the most-watched woman director. These are Letterboxd rankings based on its members’ activity, not box-office rankings or a universal critical verdict.
Rank #2
Popular and highest-rated are different measures
“Popular” reflects member activity regardless of rating. “Highest-rated” uses a weighted average of member ratings during the period. A film can therefore be widely watched or discussed without topping the rating list, and a high-rated film need not be the most popular. The roundup’s displayed ranking results are marked as of January 1, 2023.
For the main results, Letterboxd generally considered films with a first national release in any country from January 1 through December 31, 2022, and at least 2,000 ratings following release. Some categories with smaller audiences used different minimums. The film pool included qualifying theatrical and streaming releases; direct-to-streaming films, TV movies, and films with limited theatrical releases could qualify. A festival screening without a national release did not qualify yet; Letterboxd said the film would be counted in the year of its national release.

How to see your Letterboxd year in review
The public roundup is available to read regardless of whether you received a personal recap. Your own annual summary is a separate feature built from your dated Diary activity. Letterboxd’s current help article, updated September 30, 2026, says members need at least ten films logged for the previous year. Free members are alerted in the app and by email if they opted into general email notifications; the annual summary becomes available in early January. On the web, Letterboxd directs members to letterboxd.com/yir/. Paying subscribers can access Stats in their profile year-round.

The support guidance also describes ten diary entries in a year as the threshold for a Pro member’s Year in Review page or an email summary for members who choose general news emails. Because help pages and product rules can change, check Letterboxd Support for the applicable year’s current instructions.

Letterboxd’s December 2022 Call Sheet announcement said personal emails required at least ten films logged during 2022 and an opt-in to general email notifications. It emphasized the difference between watching and logging: a watched mark records that you have seen a film at some point, while a log records a viewing on a particular date and adds it to your Diary.

- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
- Watched: records that you have seen the film, but does not by itself create a dated diary entry.
- Logged: records a viewing date in your Diary and contributes to the annual logged-film tally.
- Rated: contributes to community rankings, but a rating alone does not guarantee that the film counts toward your personal recap.
Letterboxd Support says watched status can be backfilled, while dated activity is what builds a Diary. If your own summary appears to omit a viewing, check whether you logged it with a date rather than only marking the film watched or rating it.
When the 2022 recap was released
In December 2022, Letterboxd said the community roundup would arrive during the first week of January, followed by personalized Year in Review emails. The journal story, “2022 Year in Review”, is dated January 6, 2023, confirming that the public retrospective was published. The “almost here” wording refers to that historical pre-release notice, not a forthcoming 2022 release.
