Leonardo DiCaprio confirmed in December 2025 that he would star in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, but he did not name his character in that interview. TheWrap later reported that he would play Chris Shiherlis, the role Val Kilmer originated in Heat (1995). The catch is that the expansive adaptation faced a costly budget dispute that helped disrupt its path to production—and the film is expected to reshape the novel’s story for the screen.
Did Leonardo DiCaprio confirm his Heat 2 role?
He confirmed that he would star in the film, not which character he would play. In an interview with Deadline, quoted by ComingSoon, DiCaprio called it “very much its own movie” and said it would tip its hat to Heat while picking up the story. He also described the project as spanning “the future, and the past.” At the time, he said the film was still being worked on and production was some way off.
The character assignment came later in trade reporting. TheWrap reported on July 3, 2026, that DiCaprio was set to play Chris Shiherlis, while noting that deal status was not settled: two sources said deals were closed, two said final negotiations were ongoing, and an Amazon MGM spokesperson said no deals had been finalized at that point. TheWrap repeated the Chris role in a September 24, 2026 casting report. So “finally confirms” overstates what DiCaprio himself confirmed in his initial statement.
Who is DiCaprio playing—and who else is in the cast?
According to TheWrap’s July and September 2026 reports, DiCaprio is set to play Chris Shiherlis, the skilled thief played by Val Kilmer in the original film. The same reporting identifies Christian Bale as Vincent Hanna, originally played by Al Pacino. The September report names Stephen Graham as Neil McCauley, originally played by Robert De Niro, and Odessa Young as Charlene.

The September report described Ebon Moss-Bachrach as being in final talks to play Kelso; that is not the same as a completed casting announcement. These are dated trade reports rather than a studio announcement confirming every contract.
What is the major catch with Heat 2?
The story is sprawling, and the film may change its structure
Heat 2 adapts the 2022 novel co-written by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner. The book works as both a prequel and sequel to the 1995 film, moving between events before and after it; TheWrap describes parts of the story as set in South America and Southeast Asia.

Mann told The Guardian that adapting his own novel took far longer than he expected because he had to recombine events to fit a two-and-a-half-hour film. That means readers should not assume the movie will include every plotline or reproduce the book’s sequence intact. Mann described the selection process as “agonising.”
The reported budget dispute complicated the film’s path
TheWrap reported that Warner Bros. and Mann could not agree on a reduced budget. The figures vary by source and stage: one unnamed source put an early target at $125 million, another at $150 million; the project later reportedly settled around $170 million, while Mann was said to have wanted about $220 million. TheWrap’s July 2026 account separately said the budget had reached $200 million at Warner Bros. and was closer to $170 million later. These are insider-reported estimates, not an officially disclosed final production budget.

TheWrap also reported that proposed cuts included scenes an insider considered essential to the film and to securing DiCaprio as Chris. The disagreement was therefore not simply about trimming a number; it concerned the scale and content of the adaptation. TheWrap reported nearly $40 million in California tax incentives, citing sources, but that does not establish the production’s final cost.
Why did Heat 2 move from Warner Bros. to United Artists?
After the Warner Bros. budget dispute, the project moved to United Artists, the Amazon MGM Studios label, following exploration of other studio arrangements. TheWrap reported in October 2025 that United Artists was in final negotiations to land the film and that no cast deals were then in place. The project’s subsequent cast reports and production listing indicate that it advanced, but they do not make the earlier budget figures official.

Is Heat 2 filming now?
As of October 4, 2026, Production List marked Heat 2 as in production and listed Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists among its production companies. TheWrap’s September 24 report said production would begin in November. Those dated reports provide the current status here; Production List is an industry database, not a studio press release confirming the full schedule.
What the original Heat’s box office tells us—and what it doesn’t
TheWrap’s 2026 report gives Heat (1995) a worldwide box office of $187.4 million against a $60 million budget. Those reported figures help explain the original film’s commercial context, but they do not establish that a sequel with a much larger reported budget will perform similarly. They are not inflation-adjusted figures or a forecast for Heat 2.
