Its imposing front is more successful than its repetitive black build and comparatively plain, cramped interior. For a fan choosing only one large Lord of the Rings set, reviewer James Whitbrook preferred Rivendell; Barad-dûr is the better fit for collectors drawn to Sauron and Mordor, or those adding to an existing collection.
What comes in LEGO Barad-dûr 10333?
LEGO lists 5,471 pieces and 10 minifigures in this 18+ Icons set. Its official US product listing, checked October 8, 2026, gives dimensions of more than 32.5 inches (83 cm) high, 17.5 inches (45 cm) wide and 12 inches (30 cm) deep. The height is especially important to check against your display space before buying. LEGO’s product listing
The model is built as four sections, with an opening gate and a movable, illuminated Eye. LEGO describes interior spaces including a forge, prison, dining area, throne room, study and library. The set also includes printed and digital building instructions; LEGO’s instructions search lists 10333 as a 2024 set. LEGO product details · LEGO building instructions
How does the build and finished model hold up?
A strong display from the front
James Whitbrook’s hands-on review for Gizmodo/io9 describes a build that comes together in four sections. He found the overall construction relatively straightforward, but said many exterior steps repeat and the predominantly black structure can make the building process visually monotonous. Those are his reported impressions, not a general build-time or difficulty test. Whitbrook’s review

Once assembled, Whitbrook found the tower’s front striking and its Lord of the Rings references rewarding. The Eye, height and dark silhouette give the model a clear focal point and make it a substantial piece for a collection centered on Mordor.
The cutaway rooms are the weaker side
Whitbrook was less impressed by the rear. Its accessible rooms offer places to stage figures, but he considered the interiors underdeveloped and cramped relative to the set’s price and exterior ambition. Buyers primarily seeking detailed rooms or hands-on play should weigh that limitation against the tower’s visual impact.

Is Barad-dûr better than Rivendell?
Whitbrook’s 2024 comparison favored Rivendell as the stronger all-around choice for someone buying just one large Lord of the Rings set. He pointed to its greater build variety and detail, while Barad-dûr’s appeal rests more on its imposing exterior and villain-focused subject. At the time of his review, he noted Rivendell had five more minifigures and roughly 700 more pieces; those are his 2024 comparison figures, not a statement about current price or availability.
| Consideration | Barad-dûr | Rivendell |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Fans of Sauron, Mordor and a dramatic dark tower | Fans of the Fellowship and Rivendell; Whitbrook’s preferred single-set choice |
| Primary strength | Towering exterior display and the illuminated Eye | More varied build and detail, according to Whitbrook’s 2024 review |
| Interior experience | Accessible rooms, judged cramped and underdeveloped by Whitbrook | More detailed overall build, as assessed in his review |
| Current price and availability | LEGO US listed at $459.99 and “Available now” on October 8, 2026 | Not stated in the cited comparison; check the local listing |
Choose Barad-dûr if its subject is the one you most want on display, you have room for its height, or it complements a collection that already includes Rivendell. Choose Rivendell if build variety and a more rounded single-set experience matter more than a towering Mordor centerpiece. Whether it is worth the current US asking price depends on what you value. The product delivers a very large, recognizable display model, an illuminated feature, ten figures and a broad set of film references. Whitbrook’s reservation is that the repeated construction and less satisfying rear cutaway make the experience feel less complete than its dramatic front suggests. His verdict is therefore qualified: Barad-dûr is a compelling Mordor centerpiece, but not his pick for the best single Lord of the Rings set.
