StarWars.com’s two-part interview feature, published September 12 and 20, 2024, explores the cast’s connections to LEGO and Star Wars and how the creators turned LEGO-style mix-and-match play into an alternate galaxy.

What do the two StarWars.com interviews cover?
Part 1: the creators’ remix premise
Published September 12, 2024, Part 1 of the StarWars.com feature focuses on the creative team and the idea behind the special. Rather than confining the story to one era, the creators could mix characters, vehicles, and alignments from across Star Wars. That approach treats the galaxy like a LEGO collection: familiar pieces can be combined in unexpected ways.

The interview also explains two LEGO terms that inform the title and premise. A “signature figure” is a minifigure built to represent its maker; “greebling” means adding small LEGO parts to a surface for visual detail. The protagonist Sig Greebling’s name nods to that fan vocabulary.
Part 2: cast memories and character choices
Part 2, published September 20, 2024, brings Gaten Matarazzo, Tony Revolori, Ahmed Best, and Bobby Moynihan into the conversation about Star Wars and LEGO memories. Best recalls building LEGO with his son; Revolori and Matarazzo remember enjoying LEGO as children. The actors also recall playing LEGO Star Wars video games when they were young. These are personal recollections from the interview, not claims about audience-wide habits.

Why is Darth Jar Jar central to the interviews?
The alternate-universe premise gave the creators room to reinterpret characters, and Darth Jar Jar became one of its most striking examples. Showrunner, writer, and executive producer Benji Samit says he pitched the idea early. As he put it, “And to our great surprise and pleasure everyone at Lucasfilm was on board to do it.”
Ahmed Best, who voices Darth Jar Jar, wanted the darker take to retain the familiar character’s buoyancy. “I wanted to do a dark version of Jar Jar,” he says, while still allowing for “these moments where it’s the Jar Jar you know and love. Which is this levity, this joy.” The contrast is the creative point: the character can be recast as a threat without losing every trace of the personality audiences recognize.

How do the interviews connect to the sequel?
The original special runs for four parts and debuted exclusively on Disney+ on September 13, 2024. Its story starts when Sig finds a powerful artifact in a hidden Jedi temple, scrambling the galaxy’s familiar roles and alliances. Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit wrote and executive-produced it, Chris Buckley directed, and Daniel Cavey and Dan Langlois produced it. Details are listed by Disney+ Press and Lucasfilm.
The 2025 sequel, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, continues the story. Returning voices include Matarazzo, Revolori, Moynihan, Martin, Cusack, Best, and Hamill; new voices include Dan Stevens as Solitus, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, and Ben Schwartz as Jaxxon. Hernandez and Samit returned as writers and executive producers, with Buckley directing. Lucasfilm’s production page identifies Disney+ as its viewing destination.

New spins on familiar characters
A behind-the-scenes interview about Pieces of the Past shifts from the original special’s broad remix idea to voice performances and individual reinterpretations. Tony Revolori recalls Sam Witwer improvising a musical moment for Maul; Samit describes trying different approaches to give the character a new spin.
Eckstein, voicing Ahsoka, emphasizes that a changed appearance and setting need not alter the character’s core: “Even if she looks different, even though it’s in a much different galaxy, her heart has to be the same.” Cameron Monaghan, who voices Cal Kestis, describes the lighter treatment as a welcome change from the character’s usual peril and angst: “It was nice to have a little bit of fun with him and have a pretty lighthearted time.” These remarks concern the sequel, not the original special.
