This is the original anime created and directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, the filmmaker known for Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. It is not the unrelated 2025 live-action series based on Harlan Coben’s work that also uses the title Lazarus. Warner Bros. Discovery’s official premiere announcement identifies the anime’s U.S. home as Adult Swim’s Toonami block.
What time did Episode 1 premiere in the United States?
The most useful way to state the U.S. release is:
- Eastern: 12:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday, April 6, 2025
- Central: 11:00 p.m. CDT on Saturday, April 5, 2025
- Mountain: 10:00 p.m. MDT on Saturday, April 5, 2025
- Pacific: 9:00 p.m. PDT on Saturday, April 5, 2025
That timing explains why both April 5 and April 6 appear in legitimate listings. Adult Swim publicized the premiere as Saturday, April 5 at midnight, referring to the Saturday-night Toonami schedule. In strict calendar terms, however, midnight at the end of that Saturday-night viewing period is the beginning of Sunday, April 6 for viewers in the Eastern time zone.
#1 Best Overall
| Time zone | Premiere time |
|---|---|
| Eastern Time | 12:00 a.m. EDT, Sunday, April 6 |
| Central Time | 11:00 p.m. CDT, Saturday, April 5 |
| Mountain Time | 10:00 p.m. MDT, Saturday, April 5 |
| Pacific Time | 9:00 p.m. PDT, Saturday, April 5 |
| United Kingdom | 5:00 a.m. BST, Sunday, April 6, according to contemporary schedule coverage |
The Pacific date is especially important: a midnight Eastern broadcast corresponds to 9 p.m. Pacific on the same date, April 5—not April 4. A few online listings made that conversion incorrectly.
Where can you watch Lazarus Episode 1?
Max
Lazarus Episode 1 was announced for Max on Sunday, April 6, 2025, the day after its Adult Swim television premiere. The announcement confirms the next-day release but does not establish a precise drop time such as 12:01 a.m. or 3:00 a.m. Do not rely on an exact Max hour unless the service displays one for your account and region.
Max’s catalog, branding, and availability can vary by country and over time. In the latest U.S. availability check cited for this guide, listings showed the season through Adult Swim and Max-related services. JustWatch’s U.S. listing is useful for checking current subscription and purchase options, but its information can change.
Adult Swim and Toonami
The original U.S. English-language premiere aired on Adult Swim’s Toonami block. That linear broadcast is now a past release, but Adult Swim’s online official Lazarus episode index lists episodes from the season.

Digital purchase
U.S. availability trackers have also identified digital purchase options. Prices, storefronts, language tracks, and episode-by-episode availability are dynamic, so check the current listing before assuming a particular retailer carries the episode.
Why do some listings say April 5 and others say April 6?
There are two overlapping conventions:
- Schedule convention: Adult Swim promoted the episode as airing at midnight during the Saturday, April 5 Toonami lineup.
- Clock-and-calendar convention: 12:00 a.m. Eastern is technically the first minute of Sunday, April 6. At that same moment, it was still Saturday evening in the Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones.
Therefore, neither date needs to indicate a different U.S. episode. The clearest full description is: the English-dubbed premiere aired at 9:00 p.m. PDT on Saturday, April 5, and at 12:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
When an episode database uses April 6, it is generally recording the Eastern-time calendar date. When an Adult Swim announcement uses April 5, it is following the advertised Saturday-night block schedule.
Was the first episode dubbed or subtitled?
The U.S. premiere was the English-language version. Warner Bros. Discovery’s original release plan said that Japanese-language episodes with English subtitles would debut on Adult Swim and Max 30 days after their English-language premieres. That was the launch plan, not a permanent restriction on the subtitled version.
For viewers watching now, the situation is different from the original premiere week. Adult Swim’s current episode listing includes both dubbed and subtitled versions. If a search result only shows the dub, it does not necessarily mean the Japanese audio is unavailable; the available language track can depend on the platform, region, and account.
What is Episode 1, “Goodbye Cruel World,” about?
Spoiler-light synopsis: The story opens in the year 2052, when Dr. Skinner creates Hapna, a drug presented as a miraculous painkiller. The apparent breakthrough has a devastating delayed consequence: Hapna is revealed to have a fatal effect.
As the crisis develops, Hersch approaches Axel, an incarcerated escape artist, and asks him to help locate Skinner. Axel breaks out of prison, triggering a high-speed pursuit through the city. Four other agents—Doug, Christine, Leland, and Eleina—are sent after him. The official Episode 1 synopsis from Aniplex highlights Axel’s prison encounter, his escape, and the team’s parkour-heavy chase.

The episode establishes the series’ central combination of science-fiction conspiracy, international pursuit, and kinetic action without requiring viewers to know anything about the wider story in advance.
How long is Episode 1?
Episode 1 runs for approximately 24 minutes. Some third-party services display or round the runtime to 25 minutes, so 24 minutes is the safer description rather than an absolute platform-independent runtime. The first season is listed as containing 13 episodes.
The series is animated by MAPPA and planned and produced by SOLA Entertainment, according to the official Aniplex series page.

Japan had a separate broadcast schedule from the U.S. Adult Swim premiere. Episode 1 aired on TV Tokyo and affiliated stations at 11:45 p.m. JST on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The official Japanese broadcast and streaming schedule lists some subscription streaming services from 12:15 a.m., with additional services beginning April 9.
That Japanese television time should not be used as the U.S. release time. Distribution arrangements were territory-specific. Contemporary U.K. schedule coverage reported a Sunday, April 6 release at 5:00 a.m. BST, while viewers elsewhere should check their local broadcaster or streaming service.
What to check if you cannot find the episode

- Check your platform and region: A U.S. Max or Adult Swim listing does not guarantee availability in another country.
- Check authentication: Adult Swim’s web player may require a participating cable-provider login.
- Check the service’s current catalog: Streaming rights and digital purchase listings can change even after a season has completed.
