Lawrence Welk Jr.’s January 2026 lawsuit sought to dissolve The Welk Group and obtain damages after what his side describes as his removal from the family company. The allegations—including that a board action eliminated his CEO role and benefits—come from plaintiff-side counsel’s account of the complaint; they are not court findings. The phrase “illegally ousted” states the plaintiff’s position, not an established legal conclusion.

What the January 2026 lawsuit alleges

Holtz Matthews LLP announced on February 5, 2026, that Welk Jr. had filed a complaint on January 20 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The firm identified the defendants as his son Kevin Welk, The Welk Group, Inc., his nephew Jonathan Fredricks, and Stephen Baron. According to the firm, the complaint seeks to dissolve the company and requests compensatory and punitive damages. The announcement’s headline stated a $30 million amount; that is a requested amount, not an award or a court determination. Holtz Matthews LLP’s February 5 announcement

Disputed board action and loss of role

As summarized by the law firm, the complaint alleges that a November 2022 board meeting changed company rules to prevent anyone over age 74 from serving as CEO, eliminated the CEO position, and led to Welk Jr.’s removal. It further alleges that he lost a monthly salary of $35,303, a bonus, an expense account, and health benefits. These details and figures are allegations relayed by his counsel; the available material does not independently verify them.

Shareholding and alleged company spending

The firm’s account says the complaint alleged that Welk Jr. retained 28.551% of the company’s stock after his removal. It also reports that the pleading accused Kevin Welk of using $231,782.07 in company funds for an Aston Martin. Neither the ownership figure nor the spending allegation is independently confirmed here, and the accusation should not be treated as a finding of misconduct.

Why the company history matters to the complaint

Holtz Matthews LLP’s account of the complaint says Welk Jr. joined his father’s enterprise and helped expand its music and resort operations. The firm also says the pleading described him as instrumental in the sale of Welk Music Group to Concord Music in 2015 and Welk Resorts to Marriott in 2021. These descriptions of his role come from plaintiff-side counsel, rather than an independent court finding. The dispute therefore concerns not only his reported shareholding but also the leadership role and business contributions he says were taken from him.

How this case differs from Welk Jr.’s separate age-discrimination lawsuit

The January 2026 company-dissolution and damages case is distinct from a separate lawsuit filed in February 2024. A MyNewsLA report dated August 28, 2026, says that the 2024 case alleged wrongful termination, age discrimination, and failure to prevent discrimination. It also reports that Welk Jr. died on February 5, 2026, aged 85, and that his widow, Lynn H. Welk, assumed the plaintiff role in that separate case as personal representative of his estate. That report does not establish the status or outcome of the January 2026 action. MyNewsLA’s August 28, 2026 report

A federal docket mirror also records a different 2024 case involving Welk Jr. and The Welk Group that was removed to federal court and remanded to Los Angeles County Superior Court in May 2024. That procedural history concerns the separate matter and does not verify the January 2026 lawsuit’s docket status. Federal docket mirror

What is—and is not—established about the case’s status

The available sources do not establish a ruling on the January 2026 complaint, liability, or its current procedural status. The Los Angeles Superior Court provides civil case and calendar lookup services, but the available search results did not identify this action’s case number, filed complaint, current calendar, or rulings. Readers seeking a current status should check the court’s official portal directly. Los Angeles Superior Court

The law firm’s February announcement also referred to two other related cases and listed trial dates of August 17 and October 19. Those dates were stated in that release and do not establish present schedules or outcomes; the announcement does not attach them to the January 2026 lawsuit. What to make of the public statements

Plaintiff’s attorney Jordan Matthews said, “We will not tolerate their reckless and malicious abuse of our client and intend to hold them fully accountable for their reprehensible actions, attempting to tarnish the legacy of an 85-year-old man, and a giant in the industry.” The statement is counsel’s advocacy for his client, not a court’s characterization of the defendants’ conduct.
