NBC renewed the flagship series for its 25th season in May 2025; that season premiered September 25, 2025, and concluded May 14, 2026. The newer update is that NBC has renewed the show for Season 26, scheduled to premiere October 8, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET.
The original news was NBC’s renewal of Law & Order for Season 25—but that season is no longer merely ahead. Season 25 premiered in the United States on September 25, 2025, concluded on May 14, 2026, and the franchise has since received an even newer update: NBC renewed the flagship drama for Season 26.
Season 26 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. It will follow Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which returns for Season 28 at 9 p.m. ET. The later time slot and a significant detective change give viewers more to watch than a routine renewal.

When does Season 26 premiere?

The returning principal cast reported for Season 26 includes Tony Goldwyn, Hugh Dancy, Maura Tierney, and Odelya Halevi. The season is consequently a continuation with a cast transition—not a complete reset of the series.
What happened to Law & Order: Organized Crime?
NBC has also canceled Law & Order: Organized Crime after five seasons. Its fifth season had moved to Peacock, and the spinoff’s cancellation leaves the original Law & Order and SVU as the remaining U.S. television components of the current NBC/Peacock franchise lineup.
