Lauren Jauregui publicly identified as bisexual in November 2016, at age 20, in an open letter addressed to Donald Trump and his supporters. She later stressed that the disclosure was not something she had chosen or felt fully ready for: in 2020, she said she had to explain an identity she was still coming to accept.
When did Lauren Jauregui come out as bisexual?
Contemporaneous coverage reported that Jauregui made her public statement on November 19, 2016, when she was 20. The statement appeared in an open letter to then-President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters, published through Billboard and discussed in reports by Nylon and TIME.
In the letter, she wrote: “I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it.” The context matters: this was a statement within a political letter, not a separate announcement presented as a planned coming-out campaign.

Advice to keep her personal life private
In 2017, Jauregui told Out that people around her had advised her not to be so open about her sexuality. ABC News reported her account, including her explanation that “A lot of artists are held back by the notion that they’ll lose their fan base or alienate themselves.” She also said: “Even friends and family would tell me to keep it to myself. But the more I thought about it, the more I was like, ‘Why?’”

These are Jauregui’s recollections of what people told her; they are not independently verified statements from the unnamed advisers. ABC News said it had contacted Epic Records and had not immediately received a response.
She said she did not choose to come out publicly
In a 2020 conversation with musician Chika for PAPER, Jauregui gave a more complicated account of the experience. “There’s also the fact that I did not choose to come out to the world, which was in its own way such a violent experience,” she said. “I wasn’t even ready to accept it all the way about myself and then I had to explain to the world why it was part of me.”

Her words describe her personal experience of becoming publicly identified before she felt ready. They do not establish who first made her sexuality public or the private circumstances surrounding that disclosure.

Jauregui’s later comments show that her understanding of gender and attraction continued to evolve. In a 2018 Nylon interview, she said: “I’ve learned so much, even about the gender binary since I came out as bisexual, and I’m sure that I could fall in love with anyone as long as their soul was genuine.”
