The Television Academy lists February 24, 2026, as Chapin’s date of passing. The Los Angeles Times reported that her son said she had succumbed to her “long hard fought battle” with cancer after five years. The Times also said he disclosed no additional details about her condition or death.
The Miami Herald later reported, citing Chapin’s longtime friend Priscilla Rahn, that Chapin had moved to Miami Beach for lung-cancer treatment. That detail is Rahn’s account as reported by the Herald, not further medical information released by the family.
Who was Kathy “Kitten” Anderson on Father Knows Best?
Chapin’s signature role was Kathy Anderson, nicknamed Kitten, the youngest of the three Anderson children. Father Knows Best debuted on CBS in 1954, later moved between CBS and NBC, and ran through 1960. The Los Angeles Times describes it as a six-season series with more than 200 episodes; the show history page gives the total as 203 originally aired episodes.

Producer Eugene B. Rodney explained the choice of Chapin, who had no acting experience, this way: “We finally picked a Kathy (Lauren Chapin) who had absolutely no acting experience, because she wasn’t precocious-seeming.” The show’s history page attributes the quote to Rodney.
What did Chapin do after the series?
Born in Los Angeles on May 23, 1945, Chapin began screen work in the 1950s. The Los Angeles Times reports that she appeared in A Star Is Born, Lux Video Theatre and Father Knows Best, followed by work that included General Electric Theater, the 1976 film The Amorous Adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, two Father Knows Best reunion specials and Scout’s Honor (1980). The sources give conflicting years for A Star Is Born, so the year is not specified here.

Chapin later worked as a talent agent and helped guide a young Jennifer Love Hewitt, according to the Los Angeles Times. She also wrote the 1989 memoir Father Knows Best: The Lauren Chapin Story. Current editions and availability have not been established.
Rahn, identified by the Miami Herald as Chapin’s longtime friend, reflected on the life she led beyond her child-star role: “She spent her life pouring into others and the Lord. That’s really her legacy.”
