Kurt and Brenda Warner met in 1993, married on October 11, 1997, and built a blended family that grew to seven children. Their timeline includes early financial uncertainty, the loss of Brenda’s parents in 1996, and Kurt’s later rise in professional football.
1993: Kurt and Brenda meet in Iowa
Kurt was playing college football at the University of Northern Iowa when he met Brenda, a divorced mother of two. In a later interview with CBN’s Gordon Robertson, Brenda recalled dancing with Kurt and telling him she would understand if he did not call because she had children. She said he came to see her the next morning with a rose and wanted to meet them. CBN’s interview records her recollection; a biographical entry and later publishing coverage also place their meeting in 1993.
The children were part of the relationship from the start. Kurt recalled meeting Brenda’s children soon after their first date and quickly connecting with her son. Their courtship was already a family relationship, not simply a romance between two adults.
1994–1995: Dating amid career uncertainty
Kurt’s football prospects were unsettled during their early years together. CBN reports that the Green Bay Packers cut him, after which he worked nights at a grocery store before joining the Iowa Barnstormers in 1995. That context helps explain the uncertainty surrounding their dating years, but it does not establish that their relationship depended on his football career.

1996: Brenda’s parents die in a tornado
Brenda’s parents died in a tornado in 1996, a devastating loss that both Warners later described as a turning point. CBN’s interview and profile recount that Kurt invited Brenda to move closer because she needed help with her children. The period brought their relationship more directly into the work of supporting a family through grief and practical upheaval.
1997: They marry
The couple married in 1997. History vs. Hollywood’s fact-check of American Underdog gives the date as October 11 and the location as Cedar Falls, Iowa. That exact date and location come from secondary reporting; the biographical entry confirms the year.

1998: Their family grows as Kurt’s NFL career begins
Their son Kade was born in 1998, the year after their wedding. A 1999 biographical entry also reports that Kurt legally adopted Brenda’s older children, Jesse and Zachary. CBN says Kurt signed with the St. Louis Rams in 1998, after the marriage. His professional breakthrough followed the couple’s wedding rather than preceding their relationship.
A blended family of seven
Brenda’s two older children and the couple’s five children together make a family of seven. CBN describes Brenda as a mother of seven and separately calls Kurt a father of seven. The available accounts support that total; they do not require adding further personal details to understand the relationship timeline.

How American Underdog fits the timeline
The 2021 film American Underdog dramatizes Kurt’s story, including his relationship with Brenda. The Warners told the Los Angeles Times that creative license was used while they sought to preserve the story’s essence. Treat the film as an adaptation, not a definitive record of exact dates or scenes; interviews and biographical reporting are better sources for the chronology.
