Larry Tamblyn, a founding member of the Standells who played keyboards and sang with the Los Angeles rock band, died March 21, 2025, at 82. Later reporting by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said he died at home in Newnan, Georgia, from a rare blood disorder. The Standells are best known for “Dirty Water,” the song written by their producer Ed Cobb that became an unofficial anthem for Boston sports.
Who was Larry Tamblyn?
Tamblyn assembled the Standells in 1962, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The group began as a doo-wop act in the early 1960s, with Tamblyn initially singing lead. He sang on the 1964 single “Girl in My Heart.” After the band signed with Liberty Records and moved toward rock, Dick Dodd joined as drummer and lead vocalist, Rolling Stone Australia reported.
Tamblyn was the younger brother of actor Russ Tamblyn and the uncle of actor and writer Amber Tamblyn, who spoke about him in obituary coverage.
How did the Standells become linked to “Dirty Water”?
Ed Cobb, the Standells’ producer, wrote “Dirty Water”; Tamblyn did not. Released in 1966, the song reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts in July of that year, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
