For a phone-based YouTube stream that should continue while you use other apps, Android is the practical choice: Larix Broadcaster supports background streaming by default until you explicitly close it, while PRISM Live Studio requires permission to display over other apps. On iOS, neither app’s documentation supports background camera video. For a genuinely unattended, around-the-clock channel, however, neither app’s documentation establishes that a phone is a dependable 24/7 host.
Which app fits an always-on channel?
Both Larix Broadcaster and PRISM Live Studio can send a mobile stream to YouTube, which lists both as mobile encoders. That establishes YouTube compatibility, not continuous uptime. Your choice depends on the phone’s operating system, how long the stream must run, and whether you prioritize encoder configuration or built-in production tools.
| Decision point | Larix Broadcaster | PRISM Live Studio | What it means for an always-on channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube connection | Supports RTMP publishing and other protocols; YouTube lists Larix as an approved mobile encoder. Softvelum’s Larix page and YouTube’s encoder list. | Provides a YouTube setup guide and supports platform-account and custom RTMP routes. YouTube lists PRISM as a mobile encoder. PRISM’s YouTube guide and YouTube’s encoder list. | Both can publish to YouTube, but neither listing promises that a phone will stay live indefinitely. |
| Android background video | Background streaming is available by default until the app is explicitly closed. Larix FAQ. | Enable “Allow display over other apps” for broadcasting while using other apps. PRISM background-broadcasting guide. | Both document an Android background path; PRISM requires an extra permission. |
| iOS background video | Larix says iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, though audio-only background capture is possible. Larix FAQ. | PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting. PRISM background-broadcasting guide. | Neither is documented as a way to keep camera video streaming after the app is backgrounded on iOS. |
| Long-session limit | On the free RTMP/SRT tier, streaming stops after 30 minutes plus another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay. Larix Premium removes this streaming time limit. Larix Premium details. | The consulted official guide and FAQ do not establish an equivalent general continuous-stream cap. | The absence of a documented PRISM cap is not proof of unlimited operation. Confirm current plan terms and test your setup. |
| Production and configuration | Protocol options include RTMP and SRT; the app also supports overlays and pause/standby modes. Some advanced capabilities are paid. Softvelum’s Larix page. | Built for mobile IRL and gaming workflows, with overlays, source composition, chroma key, and screen modes. Source limits vary by operating system and mode; PRISM advises minimizing sources for stability. PRISM sources guide. | Larix suits an encoder-first workflow; PRISM may suit a more decorated mobile show. A persistent stream benefits from keeping scenes lean. |
Choose Larix on Android when configuration matters
Larix is the stronger fit if you want protocol flexibility and documented Android background operation. For sessions longer than its free-tier allowance, account for the app’s published time limit and check current Premium terms before relying on it.
Choose PRISM on Android when the integrated show tools matter
PRISM is a reasonable choice if its platform connection and mobile production features match your format. Enable its background permission, keep the scene simple, and use the app’s End control when you want to stop: PRISM’s FAQ cautions that transmission may continue according to platform RTMP policy even if the viewing platform appears to have ended the broadcast. Background streaming is not the same as 24/7 reliability
“Always-on” can mean that a broadcast continues while you switch apps, or that a channel runs unattended around the clock. The documented Android background behavior addresses the first meaning. It does not establish that a particular phone will remain powered, cool, connected to the network, and encoding for a full day or longer. No device-specific endurance guarantee or controlled long-duration comparison is established by the cited app documentation.
If you use a phone, treat the handset, power supply, network, and app as parts of the streaming chain. Test the exact phone and connection for the duration you need, rather than treating background support as an uptime promise.

Set up either app for YouTube
Larix: configure the YouTube RTMP connection
- In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots or published instructions. See YouTube’s encoder setup information.
- In Larix, configure the RTMP publishing destination using the server/application address combined with the stream key, as described in Larix’s RTMP documentation.
- Start a test broadcast and confirm that YouTube receives the video and audio before relying on the setup for a longer session. If you need background operation, leave Larix running rather than explicitly closing it.
PRISM: connect a YouTube account or custom RTMP destination
- Follow PRISM’s YouTube setup guide for the Android or iOS workflow available in your app version.
- Connect the platform account or, where needed, enter the custom RTMP server and stream key using PRISM’s documented workflow. Treat the stream key as a credential and do not share it.
- On Android, enable “Allow display over other apps” if you want the broadcast to continue while using other apps. The exact path and availability can vary with OS and app versions; use PRISM’s background-broadcasting guide for its documented setting.
- Use only the sources your show needs. PRISM’s source limits vary by OS and mode, and its guide warns that too many sources can overload a stream. Consult the sources guide for the applicable limits.
- End the broadcast with PRISM’s End control when finished; do not assume that an ended-looking viewer page has stopped the app’s transmission.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Encoder choice does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material you broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements before running a long loop. A technically continuous stream can still face claims, restrictions, or removal if its content or permissions violate platform rules.
For a channel built around repeated or prerecorded material, also consider whether the programming is original and provides meaningful value to viewers. A phone app keeping a connection open does not by itself make content eligible for monetization or protect it from platform review.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| PRISM stops broadcasting when you switch apps on Android | The required overlay permission may not be enabled, or the app/OS version may handle the setting differently. | Check PRISM’s “Allow display over other apps” permission and consult its current background-broadcasting guide. |
| Larix stops after a free-tier session | The free RTMP/SRT allowance ends after 30 minutes and one further 30-minute period with a mandatory overlay. | Check the current Larix Premium terms if you need sessions beyond the published free allowance. |
| The stream will not connect to YouTube | The server URL, stream key, or selected connection route may be wrong or outdated. | Recheck YouTube’s live-stream settings and the app’s RTMP/account setup. Never paste a stream key into a public support post. |
| PRISM’s scene becomes unstable | Too many active sources may overload the stream; limits vary by OS and mode. | Remove unnecessary layers and compare your scene with PRISM’s source guidance. |
| The app is backgrounded on iOS and camera video stops | Neither app documents background camera video support on iOS. | Keep the app in the foreground for camera video, or use a different streaming arrangement suited to the requirement. |
| YouTube appears to have ended, but the app is still sending | PRISM notes that the app may continue transmitting under platform RTMP behavior. | Use PRISM’s End control to terminate the broadcast cleanly. |

- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-broadcasting app. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
