Short answer: Larix Broadcaster can send a phone-camera feed to YouTube Live, but the operating system matters. Softvelum says Android streaming can continue while the app is in the background or the screen is locked, until you explicitly close the app. On iOS, its background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, so it is not suitable for unattended camera video. Neither the vendor guidance nor the other sources reviewed establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime or a fixed maximum runtime.
What Larix does—and what “unattended” means
Larix Broadcaster is a mobile encoder for sending live audio and video to services such as YouTube Live. For this review, unattended means leaving a camera stream running while the app is backgrounded or the phone screen is locked—not closing the app and expecting it to keep streaming.
Softvelum’s FAQ says Android background streaming is available by default and continues “until you close it explicitly.” Its answer contrasts iOS: “Encoder and camera are not accessible, only audio is available.” These are vendor statements, not results from an independent long-duration test. “Screen locked,” “app in background,” and “app closed” are different conditions. The vendor’s Android statement covers the first two, with explicit app closure as the stopping condition. Actual continuity also depends on the phone, its power and thermal conditions, network stability, and how the operating system manages the app; the available sources do not quantify those factors or promise uninterrupted operation.

Set up Larix with YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key supplied for the selected live stream. Use the values shown in your own YouTube Live Control Room; do not reuse a sample key or assume one URL applies to every configuration. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Locate the server URL and stream key for that stream.
- Configure a Larix connection. In Larix, create a connection using YouTube’s supplied URL and key. Softvelum’s documentation describes setting the stream to video-plus-audio mode and choosing an appropriate bitrate; follow the current YouTube guidance and the capabilities of your connection rather than treating a sample value as universal. Consult the Larix documentation reference.
- Check the camera and audio before going live. Frame the shot, confirm the intended microphone is active, and verify the stream preview and sound in YouTube. YouTube lists an external microphone among typical streaming hardware; a compatible mount or tripod is a practical option for a fixed shot, not a Larix requirement.
- Test the background transition. Start with a short private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel. Confirm video and audio reach YouTube, then lock the screen or background Larix and observe whether the stream continues. Do not use explicit app closure as a continuity test: Softvelum identifies that as the Android stopping condition.
- Plan for power and connectivity. Start fully charged and use a dedicated Wi-Fi connection where possible. Restream recommends both for mobile-streaming performance, but neither condition guarantees a particular runtime. Its guidance is at Stream from your phone.
Network resilience and stream quality
Softvelum says deteriorating network conditions can lead to frame loss with RTMP or RTSP. Its guidance says SRT attempts to compensate within the configured latency period; that recovery window is not a substitute for a stable connection. YouTube’s encoder setup calls for its provided server URL and stream key, so do not assume SRT is available for every YouTube ingest configuration—check the options shown for your account and workflow.

Larix’s Android Google Play listing describes support for RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC/WHIP, NDI HX2, RTSP, and RIST, as well as H.264 and H.265/HEVC video. These are Android listing claims, not evidence of identical iOS support or of which protocols YouTube will accept in a given account setup. What the app listing says about advanced features
The Android Play listing also describes overlays and MP4 recording, and identifies auto-start and adaptive bitrate (ABR) as Premium features. Confirm current availability, plan terms, and regional access in the store before relying on them. The listing does not establish these features for iOS or guarantee unattended continuity.

When Larix is—and is not—a good fit
- Consider it for Android if your goal is to send a phone-camera feed to YouTube and you can keep Larix open in the background while managing power, framing, audio, and network conditions.
- Do not choose it for background camera video on iOS based on the vendor’s stated camera and encoder limitation.
- Do not treat background capability as a 24/7 guarantee. The reviewed sources give no guaranteed uptime or fixed maximum duration across phones.
- Choose the connection protocol carefully. Check YouTube’s available ingest details and understand that the vendor describes SRT’s recovery as limited by its latency setting.
