Google Pixel’s sponsored “Race To The Finish” video, published on November 21, 2023, put McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in a staged contest: use Magic Eraser to remove the other from a photograph, and the first to finish keeps a Pixel 8 Pro. It was an advertisement, not an F1 race or an independent phone test.
What happens in “Race To The Finish”?
The approximately 1-minute-15-second campaign has Norris and Piastri race through the same photo-editing premise: each tries to erase the other driver from an image. The prize mechanic is straightforward—the first to complete the edit is supposed to keep the Pixel 8 Pro. Google Pixel US identified the promotion as sponsored in its social post; coverage of the campaign gives its title, runtime and setup.
The available report establishes the challenge’s rule, but does not independently verify which driver ultimately won. The video’s competitive framing is part of the promotion, not evidence of a standardized timing test.

What Magic Eraser does
Magic Eraser is a Google Photos editing tool designed to remove distracting people or objects from a picture. In general, a user identifies the unwanted area—by selecting or brushing over it—and the software generates replacement imagery for the space. The result depends on what the original image contains: reconstructing a plain background is a simpler task than filling in a crowded scene or details obscured by a person.
Is Magic Eraser exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro?
No—not according to the campaign coverage. At the time, Google Photos also offered Magic Eraser on some supported non-Pixel devices, subject to eligibility and plan requirements. The Pixel 8 Pro was the featured phone, and the report described its version as improved, but did not provide a controlled comparison or measurements showing how it differed. Access rules and supported devices may have changed since 2023, so this historical account does not establish current eligibility.
What the advertisement demonstrates—and what it doesn’t
The video makes the basic idea easy to understand: identify a person in a photo and let the tool fill the area they occupied. Its fast, clean-looking challenge is a promotional demonstration, however, not proof that edits always happen instantly or work equally well on every image. It does not establish that the Pixel 8 Pro is faster than every other supported phone, that the feature is exclusive to it, or that the displayed edit was independently timed.

As with object-removal tools generally, outcomes can be less convincing when the subject overlaps another person or an important object, covers complex detail, or sits against crowds, fences and other fine textures. Large erased areas, blur and low-resolution images can also make plausible reconstruction harder. Smears, halos, repeated patterns or missing details are possible signs that a result needs another edit or is not usable.

Why put an editing demo in an F1 setting?
The racing setup turns a quiet editing task into a timed contest, while Norris and Piastri give the story familiar competitors and a clear rivalry. The joke and product demonstration work together: removing one driver from a photograph shows the feature’s purpose without requiring viewers to know how image reconstruction works. The campaign’s language also fits McLaren’s racing identity. The report describes it as part of Google’s broader McLaren partnership, which it says included Google, Android and Chrome branding on team-related apparel and vehicles; that partnership context is reported there rather than independently established here.

Why the Pixel 8 Pro appears in the campaign
In this November 2023 promotion, the Pixel 8 Pro served as Google’s flagship showcase for computational photography. The ad used Magic Eraser as a quick, visible example of software editing on a phone. It does not provide enough evidence to judge the feature against other devices or to make a current buying recommendation; availability, pricing and Google Photos eligibility are separate questions that can change over time.
