Its sharpest material is not the oil-field maneuvering but the difficult conversation between Cooper and Tommy: Cooper’s sudden success exposes a dangerous business blind spot, while his reassurance to his father gives the hour its emotional weight. The surrounding plots add urgency and comic disorder, though they also make the episode feel deliberately crowded.

What happens in “Sins of the Father”
Spoilers below.
Cooper’s well hits—and the deal becomes the problem
Cooper gets the success he has been chasing when his well hits. But a productive well is not the same thing as a sound business: he signed financing from Sonrisa without having a lawyer review the agreement. Tommy is wary of the arrangement and asks Nate to look into it. The episode’s closing reveal—that Gallino is behind Sonrisa—turns Cooper’s triumph into a threat he does not yet recognize.

M-Tex’s missing settlement
Tommy and Cami learn that an insurer paid M-Tex a $420 million settlement in advance after a gas-well blowout in Louisiana. The question is where the money went. Rebecca negotiates with the insurer’s lawyers while Cami searches Monty’s office, giving the corporate thread a mix of legal pressure and private investigation.
A family funeral and an unexpected confession
Angela and Ainsley bring chair aerobics and drinking to a retirement home; an eldercare agency intervenes, and both women are detained. Against that comic detour, Tommy and Cooper visit T.L. as the family makes plans for Dorothy’s funeral. Their conversation reveals more about the harsh circumstances of Tommy’s upbringing. Cooper tells his father that he loves him and believes he did the best he could.

The father-son exchange is the episode’s strongest scene
The episode’s title points toward inheritance, and its most affecting scene gives that idea a personal meaning. Tommy’s history helps explain the damage and defenses he carries, but the conversation does not reduce him to his past. Cooper’s words offer tenderness without pretending that a difficult upbringing leaves no mark. That moment gives the episode a human center amid settlement questions, financing, and family logistics.
It also gives Tommy’s warning about Sonrisa an added edge. He can see that Cooper has entered a deal he does not understand, yet the relationship between them is not simply a father correcting a son. Cooper’s reassurance suggests a bond capable of recognizing both what Tommy endured and what he tried to do differently. TVLine’s recap emphasizes the exchange and the revelation about Tommy’s childhood; TechRadar likewise frames the connection as an emotional turning point. TVLine recap · TechRadar episode feature

Does the episode’s crowded mix work?
“Sins of the Father” cuts between a potentially predatory oil deal, a massive settlement with an uncertain destination, mourning, and the Norris women’s retirement-home escapade. The contrasts give the series its unruly energy: grave family history can sit beside a farcical public scene, and oil-business danger keeps intruding on personal life. But the number of active threads also means the hour is more compelling as setup than as a neatly resolved story.
That balance is reflected in the small sample of critic excerpts displayed on Rotten Tomatoes. One describes the episode’s quiet as the kind that comes before a storm; another praises moments of insight despite plot problems, while other excerpts point to inconsistency. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page showed four critic reviews, so these comments should be read as a handful of reactions—not a broad critical consensus or an audience score. Rotten Tomatoes episode page

What “back” means for the series
Paramount reported 9.2 million global streaming views for the first two days of the Season 2 premiere, and 35 million global streaming viewers for the Season 1 premiere. Neither figure measures Episode 2, and they should not be used as evidence of this installment’s audience reception. As a return to Landman, this episode re-establishes the show’s mixture of oil-industry stakes, family strain, and abrupt comedy. Its clearest success is more intimate: Cooper and Tommy’s conversation gives the season’s business danger an emotional counterweight. The plot threads are still gathering force, but the family scene makes the hour’s title resonate beyond its financial entanglements.
