Sam Elliott’s arrival gives Landman a fresh source of energy as season two begins, even as the premiere’s familiar approach keeps it from feeling like a bold reset. The result is a promising return that, in one surfaced episode review, falls short of the high bar set by season one.
Does Sam Elliott make the premiere feel new?
Elliott joined Landman as a series regular for season two, making his addition a clear point of interest in the show’s return. His presence offers the season a new dimension without requiring the series to abandon the recognizable framework that brought it here. That combination is the premiere’s central appeal: a welcome change in its lineup, set against a series identity that remains intact.

That is a measured case for the return, not a claim that Elliott transforms every part of the episode. Paramount+’s announcement confirms his series-regular status, but does not assess his performance in this premiere.
Is the premiere strong or too safe?
The episode-level assessment surfaced by Rotten Tomatoes is mixed-positive: it sees potential in the premiere but judges it below the standard established by the first season. That is one critic’s view, not evidence of a broad consensus. It aligns with the episode’s cautious balance: the return has enough freshness to feel promising, but its familiar formula may not satisfy viewers hoping for a more substantial change.

Whether that restraint feels comfortable or overly safe will depend on what a viewer wants from the next season. Elliott’s arrival provides a reason to be curious; the premiere’s continued reliance on the series’ established shape gives little indication, by itself, of how far the show will evolve.
How did the season premiere perform?
Paramount+ reported 9.2 million global streaming views for the season-two premiere during its first two days after its November 16, 2025 debut. The company reported a different figure for season one: 35 million global streaming viewers for that season’s premiere over days 1–90, from November 17, 2024, through February 14, 2025. Paramount+ defines that first-season measure as total watch time divided by runtime. These are company-reported metrics with different labels and measurement windows, so they should not be read as a like-for-like comparison.
