The miniseries gave Albert Blithe a false ending. He recovered from his Normandy wound, served again—including in Korea—and died in 1967.

Band of Brothers says Albert Blithe never recovered from his Normandy wounds and died in 1948. That ending is wrong: Blithe recovered, continued his military career, served in Korea and died in 1967, according to a PBS documentary transcript.

What does Band of Brothers say happened to Blithe?

In “Carentan,” Blithe is the viewpoint character. The episode’s closing text says he never recovered from his wounds and died in 1948. The claim makes his injury the end of his story, but it does not match the biographical account presented by PBS.

The History Channel’s episode guide describes the miniseries as an adaptation of Stephen E. Ambrose’s book and cautions viewers against treating it as a documentary. Its wording is explicit: “Band of Brothers is not a documentary. It was made as a work of dramatic entertainment.” That distinction does not excuse a false end card, but it helps separate the series’ dramatic presentation from a verified life history. What really happened to Albert Blithe?

PBS’s A Company of Heroes transcript says Blithe recovered from his Normandy injury, continued his military career, fought in Korea, earned several medals and died in 1967. The same segment describes 1948 as the date people had reported for his death, attributing it to his wounds. PBS documentary transcript

A biographical account likewise says he returned to service and reached the rank of Master Sergeant. That source is secondary reporting, so the broad correction is better established here than every detail of his service record. Biographical account

Series end card and the mistaken account it reflects Says he did not recover Not included 1948, attributed to his wounds
Corrected account in PBS’s documentary transcript Recovered Continued military career; served in Korea 1967

How did the 1948 mistake reach the series?

The reported explanation is that Easy Company veterans interviewed by Ambrose had lost track of Blithe and believed he had died from his wound. Ambrose’s book repeated that account, and the miniseries carried it into its end card. A biographical summary says later family information corrected the account in subsequent editions of the book, while the television series retained the earlier claim. Biographical account

This is a reported route for the mistake, not a fully documented production chronology: the underlying interviews, correction correspondence and production notes are not established by the sources cited here.

Is Blithe’s cause of death known?

The sources available here do not establish a definitive medical cause. The biographical account reports that Blithe suffered a perforated ulcer, was hospitalized in Wiesbaden and underwent surgery. In the PBS transcript, his son recalls heavy drinking and connects it to his death. Neither account, as presented here, supplies a primary medical record, so neither should be treated as a conclusively verified cause. PBS documentary transcript Biographical account
