Landman has a compelling documentary-adjacent subject—a West Texas oil boom that brings roughnecks and billionaires into the same volatile orbit—but it is a drama, not a documentary. Its crisis-manager setup gives Taylor Sheridan a fresh occupational world; the series is less fresh when family conflict and emphatic speeches crowd out that world. “Worse” is a fair verdict if you value focused storytelling over sheer watchability, but the show remains an engaging, uneven ride rather than a simple failure.
What is Landman about?
Paramount describes Landman as a modern story of fortune-seeking in Texas oil boomtowns, set among roughnecks and billionaires. Paramount Global Content locates the drama in West Texas and lists its format as 60 minutes. The series adapts the 11-part Boomtown podcast from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly. Paramount’s series page and launch announcement frame it as an “upstairs/downstairs” story: workers and wealthy operators caught up in an oil boom with consequences for climate, the economy, and geopolitics.
That setup promises more than a new backdrop for a family saga. It puts labor, wealth, danger, and regional identity within reach of the drama. But the official premise establishes what the show wants to explore, not whether every occupational or industry detail is accurate. Landman should be judged as a scripted drama, not treated as a guide to how the oil business works.
Is it really Yellowstone with oil?
The comparison is useful, but it is not a claim that Landman is an official Yellowstone spin-off. The connection established by Paramount and the reviews is Taylor Sheridan, and critics have naturally compared the two shows. TV Guide presents Landman as an oil-industry drama with the potential to follow in Sheridan’s established style; Yahoo Entertainment’s review asks, “What If ‘Yellowstone,’ But With Oil?”

The resemblance lies in the dramatic machinery: a regional power center, high-value resources, money and influence, and personal relationships tangled up with business. The shift from ranching to oil changes the texture and the stakes, but it does not automatically change the storytelling formula. The key question is whether the oil-field world drives the conflict or becomes scenery for familiar family and business crises.
Where the series works
A strong engine for conflict
The central setup has built-in momentum. A crisis manager navigating an outsized, high-pressure oil business can move between workplace hazards, wealthy decision-makers, and private fallout. That gives the series a practical reason to keep shifting scale: a business problem can become a human one, and vice versa. TV Guide’s favorable framing reflects the appeal of this kind of Sheridan-led drama, while even skeptical coverage leaves room for the show’s capacity to entertain.

A different regional world
West Texas oil country offers a distinct setting from Yellowstone’s ranching world. The contrast between roughnecks and billionaires gives the premise a class dimension, while the boomtown frame suggests a place shaped by resource extraction and sudden wealth. That specificity is the show’s best opportunity to be more than a change of industry label.
Why the Yellowstone formula can feel weaker here
The workplace can lose the spotlight
The premise is strongest when it keeps work, risk, and money in view. It is less distinctive when ensemble and family entanglements take over. A show about people managing the pressures of oil can become another drama about powerful people managing one another; the latter may be watchable, but it makes the setting feel less essential.

The dialogue can announce what the story already shows
Yahoo’s review questions whether Landman earns its Sheridan comparison and calls attention to its oil-industry speeches. That criticism points to a real tension in the show’s approach: big declarations can make a world feel vivid, but repeated emphasis can also flatten it. When dialogue spells out the themes rather than letting conflicts reveal them, the drama feels more familiar than insightful.
Its ambition is more interesting than its consistency
The show wants to hold roughnecks, billionaires, family life, and the wider consequences of an oil boom in one frame. That is a rich set of ingredients, but they do not always reinforce one another. The result is an uneven balance: the crisis-driven core can sustain attention, while melodramatic detours dilute the distinctive subject matter.

What do critics say, and is it worth watching?
Critical response is not unanimous. TV Guide makes the case for Landman as a worthy successor within Sheridan’s style; Yahoo takes a more skeptical view of the comparison and the show’s dialogue. A later counterpoint comes from The Washington Post’s review of the Season 2 finale, which separates quality from entertainment value: it calls the series not good but a great watch and notes that the season’s focus shifts. That is a useful description of the show’s appeal, not a consensus or an objective score.
For viewers who want a sharp, focused account of oil-field work, the melodrama may frustrate. For those who enjoy Sheridan’s heightened conflicts and a busy ensemble, the crisis-manager premise gives the series enough forward motion to be an entertaining watch. The verdict depends on which side of that trade-off matters more to you.

Release and viewing details
Landman premiered on November 17, 2024. Paramount said its first two episodes began streaming that day, with subsequent episodes released weekly. Paramount also reported 5.2 million total viewers across Paramount+ and linear preview on launch day; that is the company’s launch figure, not an independent measure of season-long viewership or a measure of quality. Paramount’s official show page lists the series, but availability and subscription terms depend on territory and the current catalog.
Viewers interested in the source material can look for Boomtown, the 11-part podcast identified by Paramount as the series’ basis. The adaptation is a drama, so the podcast is a companion rather than a guarantee that the show presents the oil industry as documentary fact.
