Laid is a dark romantic comedy with a mystery at its center: Ruby discovers that her former lovers are dying in strange, seemingly unrelated ways, and she may be the one thing they have in common. The eight-episode series stars Stephanie Hsu and premiered on Peacock on December 19, 2024.
What is Laid about?
Ruby is forced to retrace her romantic and sexual past after former partners begin dying under unusual circumstances. As she tries to understand the pattern, she must also reckon with her history and the possibility that her own choices connect the deaths.
Peacock describes the setup this way: “A woman is forced to confront her past when her exes start dying in mysterious, seemingly unrelated ways, and she is the only common denominator.” The show plays that unsettling premise as a dark rom-com, with a mystery driving Ruby’s attempts to make sense of what is happening. Its comic self-doubt is captured by the question Peacock poses for Ruby: “Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?”
