Lady Gaga released “The Dead Dance” on September 3, 2025, the day Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 premiered on Netflix. The original song was written for the series and plays during Enid and Agnes’ gala performance. Gaga described its journey from breakup grief to reclaiming power and finding joy with friends.
When did “The Dead Dance” come out?
The song was released on September 3, 2025, alongside the debut of Wednesday Season 2 Part 2. Netflix announced the date, and Spotify and Universal Music Japan also identified September 3 as the release date. Universal Music Japan’s announcement reflects Japan-localized timing, not a single universal release hour. Netflix’s announcement, Spotify’s release-day post, and Universal Music Japan’s announcement confirm the release context.
Is the song in Wednesday Season 2?
Yes. Netflix describes “The Dead Dance” as a new original song Gaga wrote specifically for Wednesday. It accompanies Enid and Agnes’ performance at the gala in Part 2. Netflix says the creative team shared the scene’s evolving story with Gaga, who returned with a song suited to it.
The production kept the track secret while filming: the dance was shot to a placeholder with the same tempo, and the finished song was later delivered through Interscope in a time-locked file. Netflix’s Season 2 soundtrack guide describes the scene and how the music was incorporated.

What does “The Dead Dance” mean?
Gaga said the idea began with the emotional fallout of a breakup: “the inspiration for ‘The Dead Dance’ was a breakup, and it was all about the way that we sometimes feel when it’s over; how a relationship ending can kill our ability to feel hopeful about love.” She explained that the song then turns toward taking back power and finding happiness with friends. In a later Netflix feature, she summed up that shift: “I’m taking the power back.”
That arc—from feeling shut down by heartbreak to recovering agency and connection—is Gaga’s own explanation of the song, rather than a separate interpretation imposed on the scene. Netflix published her comments in its September 9, 2025 announcement and a later feature about the collaboration.

How the song connects to the show’s earlier Gaga moment
The collaboration followed the viral association between Wednesday’s dance in Season 1 and Gaga’s 2011 song “Bloody Mary.” Netflix later reported that Gaga had already had an idea for “The Dead Dance” when the show contacted her; she developed it further after learning it would be used in Wednesday. Gaga also previewed the new track at the Netflix and Spotify Graveyard Gala. Netflix’s account of the collaboration distinguishes that earlier fan-driven connection from this new song, which was created for the series.

Netflix reported 1.2 billion campaign impressions in the five days after Part 2’s release, saying Gaga’s post and fan recreations helped fuel the campaign. Separately, Netflix reported 28.2 million views after the September 3, 2025 debut and said Wednesday returned to the top of its Global Top 10 TV List.
