That combination can make a single purchase feel like the start of a collection. But reported spending anecdotes are not a measure of what Australians spend as a whole, and buyers should watch for counterfeit “Lafufu” dolls.
What Labubu is—and how it became a collectible
Labubu is a character created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung for his The Monsters series. Pop Mart became its commercial toy partner in 2019, bringing the character into the collectible-toy market. The wider appeal is not just about owning a plush figure: a series gives collectors different designs to seek out, while limited or hard-to-find items can make completion feel more challenging.
Social media has helped make the collecting visible. Australian interviewees told the ABC they encountered Labubu through online content and were drawn to joining a trend they saw everywhere. Advertising strategy director Renata Yannoulis of TBWA Australia told the ABC that blind boxes were not new, but were having “a really big moment in pop culture.”
Why a blind box can prompt another purchase
The reveal is part of the product
A blind box is a sealed package containing one randomly selected item from a series. Buyers may know which collection they are buying into without knowing which exact figure is inside. That uncertainty is the point: opening the box brings a moment of anticipation, followed either by the pleasure of getting a wanted design or the disappointment of getting a different one.

In a June 2025 ABC interview, a 13-year-old described joining the online trend: “I was finally hopping on the trend that was all over social media.” After not getting the figures she wanted, she said: “I feel like I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t get the ones that I wanted but like I feel that’s kind of on me because it’s like a little mystery.” These are one young collector’s comments, not survey findings.
Chance and scarcity can keep collectors engaged
Social unboxing videos let viewers experience the reveal second-hand and may encourage some to try a purchase themselves. Scarcity can add competition for particular designs. ABC’s 7.30 report on 25 August 2025 said the boxes it covered displayed a one-in-144 chance of receiving a secret figure. That probability belongs to the product context in that report; it should not be assumed for every Labubu series or release.

Consumer psychologist Dr Christina Anthony told 7.30 that blind-box collecting can resemble “an emotional lottery similar to what gamblers experience when they’re chasing the next win.” That is a comparison about a possible appeal of the repeat-reward structure, not a diagnosis of collectors or evidence that everyone who buys a blind box is gambling.
What Australian spending reports do—and do not—show
ABC’s August 2025 7.30 report included one collector’s estimate that he had spent close to A$1,600 on Labubus. It is an individual’s estimate, not an average or a national total. Australian media interviews document people collecting and spending, but the cited reporting does not establish how many Australians own Labubu dolls or how much Australian households spend on them.

Pop Mart’s business results give a sense of the character’s commercial importance, but not of Australian spending. Associated Press reported on 25 March 2026 that the company recorded 37.1 billion yuan in revenue in 2025, up 185% year over year, and that The Monsters intellectual property—which includes Labubu—accounted for about 38% of revenue. Those are company-wide figures, not sales totals for Labubu in Australia.
How to weigh the buying options
| Buying approach | What you know | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a blind box | You know the collection, but the figure inside is random. | The reveal is part of the appeal, but repeated attempts may mean spending without getting the design you want. |
| Buy a specific figure | You can target a known design, if the seller offers it. | You avoid the random reveal, but should assess seller credibility and the total price; current resale markups are not established here. |

How to avoid counterfeit “Lafufu” dolls
Australia’s consumer regulator, the ACCC, warns that counterfeit Labubu dolls—often called “Lafufus”—are circulating. The regulator describes genuine Labubu products as Pop Mart plush collectibles, including larger plush toys and smaller key-chain versions. A product description or a low price alone does not establish authenticity.
- Check who is selling the item, not just the marketplace or platform hosting the listing.
- Compare the claimed character, edition and packaging with current information from Pop Mart or the ACCC.
- Be cautious when a seller cannot substantiate an authenticity claim, or when details about the edition and packaging are unclear.
- Use current official or regulator guidance: counterfeit patterns and product releases can change.
Pop Mart Australia’s storefront lists products in The Monsters range, including vinyl plush dolls and pendant products. A live category listing does not confirm that a particular Labubu model is in stock, nor does it establish the authenticity of listings elsewhere.
