La Palma is a four-episode Norwegian Netflix limited series about a family vacation interrupted by volcanic unrest and a researcher who believes a much larger disaster is coming. The show is fictional: it uses the real Canary Island, the 2021 eruption as contextual background, and modeled volcanic-tsunami scenarios, but the catastrophic tsunami depicted on screen did not occur during the real eruption.
La Palma is a four-episode Norwegian Netflix limited series about a family vacation disrupted by volcanic unrest and a researcher who believes the danger is escalating. It is a fictional disaster drama set on the real Spanish island of La Palma—not a dramatization of a tsunami that occurred during the island’s 2021 eruption.
The series runs for approximately 181 minutes in total, making it a compact, single-session disaster thriller. Netflix presents it as a limited series, and its official listing currently contains four episodes rather than an announced second season. What is La Palma about?
The story begins at Christmas, when Fredrik and his family arrive on La Palma for a holiday. Their plans collide with a volcanic crisis: Marie, a volcanologist or volcanic researcher, notices signs that the island’s unrest may be more serious than authorities initially believe.

Two storylines drive the series:
- A family survival drama: Fredrik, his relatives, and other holidaymakers must make increasingly urgent decisions as travel, evacuation, and communication systems begin to fail.
- A scientific warning story: Marie and Álvaro try to persuade officials that the visible ash and volcanic activity may be only the beginning of a much larger emergency.
The threat develops from ash and eruption-related disruption into evacuation problems, interrupted transport, and a catastrophic tsunami scenario involving survivors trying to reach safety on Tenerife. That chain of events is the show’s fictional premise. It should not be read as a current warning for La Palma, the Canary Islands, mainland Europe, or the U.S. East Coast.
La Palma Season 1 episode guide
Netflix lists four episodes. The episode titles and running times are:
| Episode | Title | Length | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cry Wolf | 50 minutes | Fredrik’s family arrives for Christmas while Marie becomes concerned that the volcano may erupt. |
| 2 | Take-off | 48 minutes | Marie and Álvaro attempt to convince authorities that the ash eruption is only the start of the crisis. Sara wants to leave after conflict between her parents. |
| 3 | Exit Tenerife | 44 minutes | Jens faces an unethical opportunity that could help his family, while Fredrik and Marie look for another route to safety after evacuation complications. |
| 4 | Safe Spot | 39 minutes | As a catastrophic tsunami approaches, Jens tries to direct survivors toward a safe location on Tenerife. |
The episode structure is deliberately compressed. The first episode establishes the holiday setting and warning signs; the second turns scientific concern into an institutional and logistical conflict; the final two shift toward escape, moral choices, and immediate survival.
Spoiler warning: how the ending works
The finale, Safe Spot, changes the scale of the danger from a local volcanic emergency to a race against a tsunami threatening Tenerife. Jens’s role becomes especially important because survival depends not only on escaping but on getting people to a location that can protect them from the approaching water.
That ending is best understood as the culmination of the series’ two central ideas:
- Warnings matter before the disaster becomes visible. Marie’s concern is difficult to act on while the danger remains uncertain. By the time the threat is obvious, transport and evacuation options are already constrained.
- Disaster survival is collective as well as personal. The story repeatedly places characters in situations where helping one group may conflict with protecting their own family. Jens’s attempt to direct survivors toward safety turns the finale into a question of responsibility, not just escape.
The show is more interested in momentum and survival decisions than in presenting a documentary-style scientific investigation. Its dramatic ending therefore should not be treated as a prediction of what will happen to La Palma or Tenerife in reality.
Is La Palma based on a true story?
No—not in the straightforward sense. The island is real, the volcanic setting is real, and the show borrows ideas from genuine volcanic hazards and scientific debate. But the characters, family crisis, disaster chain, and catastrophic tsunami depicted in the series are fictionalized.
La Palma is one of Spain’s Canary Islands and has an active volcanic landscape. The island’s recent history gives the series a recognizable real-world backdrop: Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional records that the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption began on September 19, 2021, following seismic activity and ground deformation. It ended on December 13, 2021, after approximately 85 days and eight hours. The eruption is commonly associated with the Tajogaite volcano.

Those are real elements of the island’s volcanic context, but they do not make the Netflix plot a factual account of that eruption. The official monitoring record describes the 2021 eruption’s seismic, deformation, lava, ash, and gas activity; it does not report the catastrophic trans-Atlantic tsunami shown in the drama. See the Instituto Geográfico Nacional’s La Palma eruption records for the documented event.

Could a La Palma volcanic collapse cause a tsunami?
The underlying hazard idea is not invented from nothing, but the most dramatic version requires careful qualification. Scientists have modeled scenarios in which a large volcanic-flank landslide could displace seawater and generate tsunami waves. Such modeling is a way to explore a possible hazard under defined assumptions; it is not evidence that a giant collapse is imminent or inevitable.
The scale and consequences of a tsunami model depend on assumptions about the amount of material that collapses, how quickly it moves, the geometry of the slide, the shape of the seafloor, and how the resulting waves travel. Changing those assumptions can produce very different outcomes. Popular accounts often present the most extreme scenario without emphasizing that it is a modeled possibility rather than a forecast.
That distinction is essential when comparing the series with reality:

- Modeled: A large flank-collapse tsunami is a scientific scenario examined through hazard modeling.
- Not established: There is no basis in the supplied official monitoring record for calling the series’ tsunami imminent, inevitable, or a consequence of the 2021 eruption.
- Fictionalized: The characters and the show’s rapid escalation from eruption to catastrophic tsunami are part of the drama.
A peer-reviewed discussion of the subject is available in this scientific literature on La Palma flank-collapse tsunami scenarios. It is useful context, but it should not be confused with an official prediction.
Cast and creators
Netflix identifies Martin Sundland, Lars Gudmestad, and Harald Rosenløw-Eeg as the creators of La Palma. The principal cast includes:
- Ingrid Bolsø Berdal
- Anders Baasmo
- Alma Günther
- Bernard Storm Lager
- Thea Sofie Loch Næss
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson
- Jorge de Juan
- Amund Harboe
- Johannes Joner
- Jenny Evensen
The official episode descriptions specifically identify the family vacation, Marie’s research concerns, Álvaro’s attempt to make authorities listen, and the evacuation choices involving Jens and other survivors. They do not provide a complete character biography for every member of the ensemble, so it is more accurate to describe the cast through those verified story functions than to assign unsupported backstories.

Explore the real island behind the series
If the setting interests you more than disaster merchandise, a real-island travel resource is a better fit than a fictional survival kit. The La Palma and El Hierro walking guide covers walking and hiking, scenic driving, and public-transport information for the actual islands. It is a travel guide, not official La Palma television merchandise, and readers should confirm current retail availability and marketplace options before buying.
For broader geographic context, publisher information is also available for Canary Islands by Charles Van Haverbeke, a 336-page visual guide covering the islands, and for DK Travel’s DK Canary Islands, which includes maps, walks, safety advice, and island-by-island coverage. These books are relevant if the series prompts an interest in the real archipelago rather than a direct interest in the show itself.
What La Palma gets right—and what it changes
The series gets its strongest sense of place from using a real volcanic island as the foundation for a fictional emergency. Its scientific-warning storyline also reflects a genuine problem in disaster planning: experts may recognize a developing risk before institutions, travelers, and transportation networks are ready to respond.
Its biggest creative liberty is the speed and scale of the escalation. The show compresses complex volcanic monitoring, evacuation logistics, and tsunami modeling into a short thriller. That compression is effective for suspense, but it means viewers should separate the emotional truth of the survival story from the scientific status of the disaster scenario.
In short, La Palma is best approached as a fictional volcanic disaster drama grounded in a real landscape and informed by real hazard debates—not as a retelling of the 2021 eruption and not as a current emergency bulletin.
