The family is at the center of the NBC science-fiction survival drama, alongside a wider group of people pulled into a perilous world beneath Los Angeles. The series ran for three seasons and 30 episodes; its six-episode third season was its last.
What is La Brea about?
Created by David Appelbaum, La Brea begins when a massive sinkhole opens in Los Angeles and swallows people into a dangerous ancient world. Eve and Josh are among those who fall. Izzy escapes, while Gavin—her father and Eve’s husband—believes he can find a way to reach them. The story follows the separated Harris family and the other survivors, as mysteries involving the sinkhole and time travel unfold. The prehistoric setting and time travel are fictional elements of the series, not a depiction of real history.

In a January 2024 season-three preview, Peacock described Ty as a psychiatrist, Levi as an air-force pilot and Gavin’s best friend, Paara as a leader of a tribe in the prehistoric setting, and Lucas as a reformed heroin trafficker. That preview also named Jonno Roberts as James Mallet, Gavin’s father, and described Sam as a doctor working in the present day. These are season-context details, not a claim that each character has the same role throughout the series.
La Brea finale explained (spoilers)
In “The Road Home, Part 2,” the finale brings Eve, Gavin, Izzy and Josh together in Los Angeles in 2021. Creator David Appelbaum told SYFY Wire that reuniting the Harris family in the final scene had been a guiding idea for the series, which he described as a story about a family trying to find its way back to one another.
Rank #2
The finale gives the other survivors different paths. Ty remains in 10,000 BC and reunites with Paara; Scott returns to 2021 and seeks out a former love. It also delivers a science-fiction set piece: Gavin pilots a Stealth Bomber during a confrontation with a T. rex. Appelbaum said the series aimed to show Scott’s growth over its three seasons and described the show as ultimately optimistic.
