By January 2026, the family had returned and Goldsmith was planning a studio rebuild.
What Taylor Goldsmith said in the first days of the fires
On January 10, 2025, Yahoo News carried a first-person account attributed to Goldsmith and published by Rolling Stone. It described the previous 72 hours, as the Eaton fire and other Los Angeles-area fires upended the lives of residents. The headline used Goldsmith’s comparison: “It Looks Like a Nuclear Bomb Went Off.” Read the January 10 account on Yahoo News.
Goldsmith said he had believed his neighborhood was protected: “I’d thought we were snug in our neighborhood, but we were so wrong.” He also acknowledged the uneven scale of suffering: “It feels surreal. This is horrific, and a lot of people are hurting way worse than we are.”
What Goldsmith lost—and what happened to his house
His studio and instruments were destroyed
The January 2025 account reported that Goldsmith lost his home recording studio, equipment and vintage guitars. He described some instruments as “irreplaceable, ones my hands learned to play on that meant so much to me.” The studio was not just a room of equipment: it was a place for making music, and the instruments carried personal history as well as practical value.

His family home survived the flames but sustained smoke damage
At the time of the January 10, 2025 account, Goldsmith’s main house was reported still standing. That was not the end of the home’s fire-related impact. In a January 6, 2026 follow-up, the Los Angeles Times reported that Taylor Goldsmith, his wife Mandy Moore and their children had been away from their Altadena house for about nine months because of smoke damage, then returned. The distinction matters: the early report said the house had not burned; the later account described damage serious enough to keep the family away for months. Read the Los Angeles Times follow-up.
The losses reached beyond Taylor Goldsmith
The Los Angeles Times’ 2026 report said Goldsmith’s brother Griffin lost his Altadena home and that the brothers’ parents’ home also burned. Its retrospective described the fires’ toll as 19 people killed and more than 9,000 structures destroyed. Those are figures reported by the Los Angeles Times on January 6, 2026, not a newly refreshed count.

From immediate loss to rebuilding
Goldsmith’s account in January 2025 captured the shock of the first days; the later Los Angeles Times interview documented a longer recovery. By January 6, 2026, he was in the planning and permitting stage for rebuilding his studio. He told the Times, “I don’t want to feel like it’s changed me at all — I don’t want to give it that kind of power.”
In between, Dawes performed at FireAid on January 30, 2025, a benefit for people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. The Associated Press reported that Goldsmith’s studio and instruments had been destroyed. Read the Associated Press report on FireAid.
