Kylie Kwong announced in May 2024 that she would close her Sydney restaurant Lucky Kwong and step away from owning restaurants. Its final service was scheduled for June 26, 2024. Kwong said she would remain connected to food, but turn toward community, collaboration and sharing the stories of First Nations and multicultural communities.
When did Lucky Kwong close?
Kwong announced the closure in May 2024, with the restaurant’s last service scheduled for June 26. Lucky Kwong was at 2 Locomotive Street in Eveleigh, Sydney; a current venue listing marks it permanently closed. ABC News reported the announcement and scheduled final service, while Broadsheet’s venue listing records its former address and closure status.
Why did Kylie Kwong decide to leave restaurant ownership?
Kwong described the timing as right for her after giving restaurant ownership everything she could. She told ABC, “I just feel like it’s the right time. I have given this piece of my life everything I can give it.” She also spoke of sadness at the end of a three-decade era, alongside excitement about a new direction.
The decision followed more than 30 years cooking professionally and 24 years running her own restaurants, according to ABC. Those are distinct milestones: one describes her career as a cook, the other her period as a restaurant owner. In an Australian Story interview, she reflected on the intensity of restaurant life, the need for a more sustainable rhythm and wanting more time for family and other parts of life.

What did the restaurant mean to her?
Lucky Kwong was named in honour of the stillborn son Kwong shared with her wife, Nell. The restaurant and its artwork carried personal meaning, as discussed in the Australian Story feature. That context helps explain the significance of the place without reducing Kwong’s decision to one aspect of her personal life.

Before opening her own restaurant, she worked in Neil Perry’s Rockpool and Wokpool kitchens. She is also an author and television presenter.

In the Australian Story interview, the move from Billy Kwong to the smaller Lucky Kwong is presented as an earlier attempt to make restaurant life more sustainable. Closing Lucky Kwong marked a further step away from operating venues.

Kwong said she wanted to devote energy to community, collaboration and culture, including supporting First Nations and multicultural communities and helping amplify other people’s stories through food. She did not describe herself as leaving food altogether: “I’ll still be very much connected to the food industry but just I’ll be doing it in a different way,” she told ABC.

A later interview published in April 2026 looked back on the closure as a major transition and recalled the intense response from customers during Lucky Kwong’s final weeks.
