In December 2019, she said she was proud of the film and not gutted by its box-office performance; in a later interview, she said she hated making it. Those comments addressed different things: pride in the finished movie and frustration with its promotion, versus her experience making it.
What Kristen Stewart said in 2019
During the film’s December 2019 press cycle, Stewart told Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist that she would have been devastated if the movie had been bad and she had not felt proud of it. Instead, she said, “Luckily I’m not feeling gutted because I really am proud of the movie.”
She was also frustrated by the way promotional interviews framed the film. Stewart described the climate as polarizing and objected to being asked to fit a complicated, politicized conversation about feminism into a short television interview. Her response included the line: “Dude, we just wanted to have a good time.” It was a remark about the interview framing, not an explanation of the movie’s commercial result.
At the time, Stewart said she was bummed that the film probably would not lead to another, while still being proud it existed. Her comments combined affection for the finished movie with disappointment about the prospects for a sequel.

What she said later—and what “hated making it” means
In comments covered by The Independent in January 2024, Stewart recalled the team’s aim for Sabina’s opening scene: they wanted a strong opener that made clear what the movie was about. She then gave a sharply different-sounding retrospective: “It was a good idea at the time. I hated making that movie.”
She contrasted the experience with the 2000 Charlie’s Angels, which she said she loved. The available coverage does not establish what specifically made the 2019 production unpleasant for her. “I hated making that movie” describes her experience of making it; it does not, by itself, mean she thought the finished film was bad.

The 2019 film and its reported box office
The 2019 Charlie’s Angels was directed by Elizabeth Banks and starred Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. Sony describes it as an action comedy and presents the Townsend agency as expanded internationally. Sony’s official film page identifies Stewart’s character as part of that agency.
The Independent reported that the film earned about $73 million worldwide. That is a secondary outlet’s approximate figure, not a studio disclosure cited here. It does not establish the film’s profitability: no verified budget or net-profit calculation is available in the cited coverage. Stewart’s comments about promotion and politicized questions are her perspective, not evidence that those factors caused the box-office result.

Why the two comments are not a contradiction
- December 2019: Stewart expressed pride in the released film and objected to the way its promotion was framed.
- Later retrospective: She said she hated making the movie and separately praised the 2000 film.
- What the distinction supports: Her view of the production experience changed—or was more complicated than her brief 2019 comments conveyed. The remarks do not establish that she later condemned the 2019 film’s quality.
