2009–2010: Engagement
Shepard reportedly proposed over the 2009 holidays, after about two years of dating. The couple’s engagement became publicly visible in February 2010, when Bell wore her engagement ring at the Grammys. The reported proposal and the public appearance are separate milestones; the available accounts do not establish a specific proposal date. 2010–2012: First film together
Bell and Shepard’s first shared feature film was When in Rome (2010), according to ELLE. Shepard later wrote and directed Hit & Run, which also starred Bell and was released in 2012, as noted in Harper’s Bazaar.

March 28, 2013: Their first daughter is born
Their daughter Lincoln was born on March 28, 2013, several months before Bell and Shepard married, according to ELLE.
June 2013: Bell makes a public proposal
After a legal change affecting same-sex marriage in California, Bell publicly proposed to Shepard on Twitter, and he accepted. The gesture reflected the couple’s previously stated decision to wait to marry until same-sex couples could marry in California, according to CBS News and Harper’s Bazaar. This public exchange followed their reported 2009 engagement.

October 17, 2013: They marry at a courthouse
Bell and Shepard married on October 17, 2013, at the Beverly Hills courthouse, according to Harper’s Bazaar. A report published the next day by CBS News said they arrived to obtain a license and married in a nearby courtroom.
Bell later described the deliberately small celebration to Jay Leno: “We wanted the lowest-key day possible,” she said, as quoted by ELLE. “Then we got sandwiches and called it a day. We called that our wedding brunch.”

December 19, 2014: Their second daughter is born

2015: Bell speaks about conflict and couples therapy
In a 2015 interview, Bell described early conflict and couples therapy as part of their relationship. “Our relationship wasn’t perfect,” she said. She recalled “a couple years of fighting and of growing pains and hating each other, then loving each other and going to couples therapy and we worked it out…We earned each other.” ELLE reported her comments; they are Bell’s account of their experience, not a universal formula for relationships.
2020–2021: Public comments on recovery and therapy
Harper’s Bazaar recounts Shepard’s 2020 disclosure of a relapse involving prescription medication after an ATV injury, and Bell’s public support. In 2021, Bell said the couple periodically returned to therapy to address antagonism during the pandemic. These are public comments, not a basis for assumptions about private family matters.
