KPop Demon Hunters was made by Sony Pictures Animation with Netflix and debuted on Netflix on June 20, 2025. But the often-repeated $100 million budget figure is not confirmed by the official sources reviewed here. The first film did get a limited sing-along event in theaters; Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has since said the sequel will receive a “very broad theatrical release.”
Was KPop Demon Hunters really a $100 million movie?
There is no verified production-budget figure in the official Sony and Netflix sources cited here. Those sources establish Sony Pictures Animation’s role and the film’s Netflix release, but do not disclose its production budget or the financial terms of the Sony–Netflix agreement. Sony Pictures Animation’s project page identifies the film and its Netflix availability; it does not confirm a $100 million budget.
A Screen Daily search result reported that Netflix paid a little over $100 million toward production costs, plus a premium. The full article could not be verified here, and a reported payment is not automatically the same as the film’s total production budget. Without a reliable source that clearly distinguishes those figures, $100 million should not be presented as a confirmed budget.
Why did the first film go to Netflix instead of a standard theatrical release?
The confirmed release path was Netflix-first: the film debuted on the service on June 20, 2025. Sony’s official project page lists Netflix as its home, while Sony’s film page provides the studio’s project information. The sources cited here do not establish why the distribution arrangement was chosen or disclose the deal’s terms, so they do not support a definitive explanation of Sony’s or Netflix’s decision-making.

The first theatrical run came later as a limited, two-day sing-along event—not a conventional wide release. Netflix said more than 1,300 screenings sold out across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The Associated Press reported that the event played in 1,750 theaters, and noted that AMC did not participate. Netflix’s announcement describes the event and its audience response at Netflix Tudum; the AP account is at Associated Press.
What the success figures show—and what they do not
Netflix’s 2026 one-year retrospective reported more than 600 million views since the film’s debut, 52 consecutive weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, and 15 billion soundtrack streams worldwide. The company also cited Nielsen end-of-year data showing 20.5 billion U.S. viewing minutes in 2025. These figures describe streaming and music reach, not movie-ticket sales or a theatrical gross. The sold-out sing-along screenings are evidence of concentrated demand for a special theatrical experience. They do not establish what the film would have earned in a regular release with a longer run, different showtimes, or broader theater participation. Its chart position during the event likewise should not be treated as equivalent to the result of a standard multiweek release.
Will the KPop Demon Hunters sequel get a wide theatrical release?
Netflix confirmed a sequel on March 12, 2026, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. Netflix Tudum’s announcement confirms the project and returning filmmakers.

On September 30, 2026, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said at Bloomberg Screentime, as reported by TheWrap: “When the ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.” The statement signals a broader cinema plan than the first film’s limited sing-along event. It does not give a release date, list territories, specify how long the sequel will remain in theaters, or guarantee a commercial outcome. TheWrap’s report is available at TheWrap.

| Release | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| First film | Netflix debut on June 20, 2025, followed by a two-day sing-along event. Netflix reported more than 1,300 sold-out screenings in five countries; AP reported 1,750 theaters and AMC’s nonparticipation. | A conventional wide-release schedule, a standard opening-weekend result, or a reliable estimate of the total theatrical gross the film might have earned. |
| Sequel | Netflix confirmed the sequel and returning directors in March 2026; Sarandos said in September 2026 that it would receive a “very broad theatrical release.” | A release date, confirmed territory list, theatrical window length, or guaranteed box-office performance. |
The first film’s streaming reach and special-event ticket demand are different measures. Neither can be used on its own to calculate a hypothetical theatrical gross. The sequel’s announced release plan is more expansive, but its exact scope will remain uncertain until Netflix or its distribution partners provide specific dates and markets.
