Character designer Marion Bordeyne shared an early concept for Rumi and Jinu’s first date in KPop Demon Hunters: an aquarium setting. It was a proposed direction, not an alternate finished scene. The released film instead shows the pair outdoors under moonlight, and the aquarium idea was set aside in part because it would have required a new set and more production time.
What was the alternate Rumi and Jinu date scene?
Bordeyne’s concept art imagined Rumi and Jinu on a date in an aquarium, where the setting could give their meeting a distinct visual atmosphere. The concept did not become part of the finished film. In the released version, their date takes place outdoors at night under the moonlight. Collider’s report, syndicated by Head Topics on June 23, 2025, describes the aquarium as one possible creative direction.
| Version | Setting | Production status |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarium concept | An aquarium | Early concept art and a proposed direction; not a completed deleted scene |
| Released film | Outdoors at night under moonlight | The version shown in the finished movie |
Why wasn’t the aquarium idea used?
The reported production consideration was practical: an aquarium would have required building a new set and spending additional production time. The available reporting gives no independent estimate of how much time or effort that would have taken. It is best understood as a production trade-off behind an early concept, not evidence that an animated aquarium sequence was completed and then removed.
Was there really a kiss scene that was cut?
Separate from Bordeyne’s aquarium concept, a July 11, 2025 Koreaboo report says co-director Maggie Kang confirmed that a kiss scene between Rumi and Jinu was cut. CinemaBlend’s July 12, 2025 account discusses an apparent kiss moment in the concept boards. Neither report establishes that the cut kiss was part of the aquarium-date proposal, or that finished animation of the kiss was made. The two accounts should not be treated as descriptions of the same scene.

Where can you watch the released film?
Netflix’s official film page lists KPop Demon Hunters as streaming on Netflix and identifies Arden Cho as Rumi and Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, alongside May Hong as Mira and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey. The streaming listing concerns the released film; it does not make the aquarium concept available to watch.

What the alternate concept does—and doesn’t—show
The aquarium art offers a glimpse of one direction considered during the film’s development, while the finished movie reflects the choice that made it to release. It does not establish the existence of a complete alternate cut. For context on how the filmmakers approached music and story, co-director Chris Appelhans told Cartoon Brew: “You can’t just have seven random songs in a 90-minute movie; that’s death for an audience.”
