Netflix has officially confirmed a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. The March 12, 2026 announcement brings back original directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, but it does not yet reveal when the film will arrive, what it will be called, which voice actors will return, or what story the next chapter will tell.

Netflix has confirmed the sequel—but not a release date
The important change is that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is no longer just a possibility. Netflix’s Tudum announcement confirms that a follow-up is being developed and describes it as the first project under Kang and Appelhans’s exclusive multiyear writing-and-directing partnership with Netflix across animation.
That announcement is official, but it is deliberately high-level. Netflix has not supplied a premiere date, a production timeline, a finalized sequel title, or a detailed synopsis. A 2029 target has appeared in secondary reporting, but it should not be treated as confirmed unless Netflix, Sony Pictures Animation, or the filmmakers publish that date in a later announcement.

#1 Best Overall
In practical terms, fans have confirmation of the project and its returning creative leads—not a complete schedule for watching it.
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning
Kang and Appelhans directed the original animated film, and their return is the clearest creative detail Netflix has provided. Netflix also frames the sequel as part of a broader, exclusive multiyear relationship with the pair covering writing and directing in animation.
The filmmakers’ comments point toward a continuation rather than a disconnected spin-off. Kang has said there is more of the world to explore, while Appelhans has emphasized continuing the characters’ next chapter and the combination of music, animation, and story. Those comments establish the creative ambition of the project, but they do not confirm specific plot points.
Sony Pictures Animation also remains part of the franchise’s production context. Netflix identifies the first movie as a partnership with Sony Pictures Animation and quotes the studio’s leadership expressing enthusiasm about expanding the filmmakers’ vision in the next chapter.
What the sequel could build on
The original film follows HUNTR/X—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—three K-pop superstars who secretly hunt demons between performances. Their opponents include the Saja Boys, a rival boy band whose members are demons in disguise.
That premise gives a sequel several established ingredients to work with: concert-scale musical performances, supernatural action, Korean cultural world-building, and character-focused storytelling. Netflix’s language about expanding the universe supports describing the follow-up as a new chapter in the same world.
It does not confirm a particular storyline involving Rumi’s heritage, the Saja Boys, Gwi-Ma, a romance, a new musical group, or a specific Korean location. Those are reasonable subjects for fan speculation, but they should remain speculation until an official synopsis or filmmaker announcement provides evidence.
Why Netflix is moving ahead
The sequel follows unusually strong reported performance for the original film. According to Netflix’s anniversary reporting, KPop Demon Hunters had surpassed 600 million views since its June 20, 2025 debut, spent 52 consecutive weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, appeared in the Top 10 in all 93 countries with available lists, and reached No. 1 in 76 countries.

Those figures are Netflix-reported and should be understood as a snapshot dated to the company’s reporting. Viewing totals and chart records can change as Netflix updates its data. Netflix has also described the film as its most popular movie ever and highlighted the major chart activity generated by its music.
That performance makes the sequel a strategic expansion of a global hit, rather than a project announced only to test audience interest. The original film established a recognizable world, characters with an existing fan base, and a music-driven identity that Netflix can continue developing.
Will the original voice cast return?
There is no official returning voice-cast announcement in the sequel confirmation currently available. Netflix has not confirmed the participation of Arden Cho, Ji-young Yoo, May Hong, Ahn Hyo-seop, or any other original performer.
The return of Kang and Appelhans makes continuity behind the camera likely, but it does not establish who will perform the characters in the sequel. Cast news should be treated as pending until it comes from Netflix, Sony Pictures Animation, or the performers themselves.

What official merchandise is available while fans wait?
Merchandise is separate from sequel production, but the size of the licensing program shows how broadly Netflix is supporting the franchise. Retail availability, prices, and affiliate eligibility can change, so check the current listing before buying.
MONOPOLY Deal: KPop Demon Hunters
The clearest direct product opportunity is the KPop Demon Hunters Monopoly Deal game. Netflix’s October 21, 2025 licensing announcement identified Hasbro’s game as its first product introduction and named Amazon, Target, and Walmart as preorder retailers. It is official franchise merchandise—not evidence that the sequel has reached a particular stage of production.
Toys, collectibles, and playsets
Netflix’s licensing coverage also identifies Mattel products including HUNTR/X dolls, action figures, accessories, collectibles, and playsets. Hasbro’s wider product plans include games, plush, youth electronics, role-play products, and Furby-related collaborations. Jazwares is associated with plush products, while anniversary coverage identified a LEGO Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird set.
Costumes and accessories
Disguise, working with JAKKS Pacific, has been identified as a source of adult, children’s, and pet costumes, along with accessories and treat pails. Netflix’s announcement pointed to later-2026 availability; that timing and the final retailer assortment should be checked against current listings.
Fashion and other licensed merchandise
A KPop Demon Hunters collaboration with Vans was announced with metallic gold details, HUNTR/X iconography, and starry embellishments. The broader official merchandise ecosystem includes Netflix Shop, Loungefly, fashion, books, bags, and collectibles. These collaborations may be useful for fans, but none of them confirms a sequel release window.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What announcement should fans expect next?
The next meaningful update will likely answer one of the questions Netflix has left open: the official title, a release window, the returning voice cast, a story synopsis, or first-look material such as character art, a teaser, or trailer.
Best Value
Until then, the most accurate description is simple: KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct, and the project is intended to expand the world and continue its characters’ story. Everything beyond those points—including a 2029 release, specific plot developments, and cast returns—remains unconfirmed.
