Cindy Campbell rented the building’s recreation room for a Back-to-School Jam, reportedly to raise money for school clothes. Her brother Clive Campbell, an aspiring DJ known as Kool Herc, played soul and funk through a powerful sound system influenced by Jamaican sound-system culture. The event took place at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx.
Smithsonian Magazine reports that admission was 25 cents for women and 50 cents for men, and that the party raised $300. Those figures are the magazine’s account, not independently audited records. Its description also places the jam in the neighborhood block-party tradition, where music, dancing, and community gathering mattered alongside the sound system.
Who organized the jam, and what evidence supports its date and location?
Cindy Campbell organized the event; Kool Herc provided the music. The distinction matters: the familiar shorthand “Kool Herc’s party” can obscure her role in making the gathering happen.

PBS’s History Detectives examined a flyer copy recovered from Harvard’s hip-hop archive. It names “A DJ Kool Herc party, back to school jam, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, in the rec room August 11, 1973,” and lists a 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. schedule. The program’s investigator concludes that the event almost certainly happened. The flyer is evidence for a specific party at a specific place and time; it does not, by itself, prove that hip-hop began in a single night.
How did Kool Herc extend a break on two turntables?
An instrumental break is a passage in a song where the vocals drop out and the rhythm—especially the drums—comes forward. Dancers often responded to those sections. Herc’s technique was to use two turntables and copies of the same record: while a break played on one turntable, he cued the corresponding break on the second copy, then switched between them to keep the percussion going longer.

That made a brief passage last long enough for dancers to stay in the moment. The sources describe this as a significant early DJ practice, not proof that this one party was the first time every technique associated with hip-hop was used.
Was hip-hop really born at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue?
August 11, 1973, is widely commemorated as hip-hop’s birthday. Smithsonian Magazine’s coverage and a 2023 U.S. Senate resolution both recognize the party as an origin milestone. The date gives a sprawling cultural history a memorable point of reference.

But a milestone is not the same as a definitive beginning. In the PBS program, Harvard professor and hip-hop archive curator Marcyliena Morgan says, “Because the birth is a process, it is not just one moment.” A Bronx graffiti artist interviewed for the program calls Herc one of hip-hop’s founding fathers while cautioning that a movement cannot be traced to one person. The evidence for the party is stronger than any claim that the party alone created hip-hop.
Why is Cindy Campbell part of the story?
Campbell’s role was not incidental: she organized and rented the space for the Back-to-School Jam. Naming her helps tell the origin story as a community event rather than a lone-DJ legend. The party’s purpose, setting, and music all belong in the account of how a local gathering became a landmark in a much larger movement.

Dwandalyn Reece, associate director for curatorial affairs at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, connects the block-party format to hip-hop’s communal roots: “That spirit of community, which we all talk about as the roots of hip-hop, really originates in that block party concept.”

Hip-hop became more than DJing. Smithsonian’s account describes MCs taking microphones to rhyme, beatbox, and use call-and-response over the music. It identifies DJing, MCing, breaking, graffiti, and fashion among hip-hop’s cultural elements. These elements developed through people and communities over time; the sources do not establish that all of them began at the 1973 jam.

That broader history is part of why a single-party origin story needs care. As Berklee College of Music Africana studies dean Emmett G. Price III puts it, “Hip-hop culture was created and defined by young people.” Herc himself describes its reach as both local and expansive: “Hip-hop is both an American immigrant story and a global story. It belongs to everybody.”

For a broader cultural history, Smithsonian Magazine cites Jeff Chang’s Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation. It is a contextual history, rather than a firsthand record of the 1973 party.
