The Kokomo City trailer introduces a candid, black-and-white documentary about four Black transgender sex workers: Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver. Directed by D. Smith, the 2023 film lets the women speak about their lives in their own voices, with humor and an unvarnished style alongside harder realities.
What is Kokomo City about?
Kokomo City is a 73-minute documentary directed by D. Smith. It centers on the experiences and perspectives of Carter, Koko Da Doll, Mitchell, and Silver, who are based in Atlanta and New York City. Their accounts address life as Black women, trans women, and sex workers. The film also includes Black men reflecting on pressure to embody traditional masculinity, while the four women remain its focus. Magnolia Pictures’ film page provides the official synopsis and trailer.
Smith has described the project as a response to her own experience of being ousted for being transgender and a way to examine why trans women may have to turn to sex work. She wanted the film to reach audiences beyond the LGBTQ community and to challenge familiar, narrow stories about trans women. The result aims for candor without giving up humor or a lively, creative presentation.
Who appears in the film?
- Daniella Carter
- Koko Da Doll
- Liyah Mitchell
- Dominique Silver
Smith is the director and the film’s central creative voice; she also produced, shot, and edited it. The women’s testimony is not merely material for an outside narrator to interpret: their words and presence are the core of the documentary. Silver described the process of being filmed as requiring trust because the participants were vulnerable in their situations, according to Sundance’s premiere report.

What makes the trailer’s style distinctive?
Black-and-white cinematography
Smith chose monochrome as an expressive decision, not a neutral way to record interviews. At the Sundance premiere, she said black and white represented truth and could elevate the women’s stories, giving them dignity and a timeless quality. The stark visual treatment makes the film’s direct conversations feel carefully composed while keeping attention on the speakers.
Candid voices, humor, and sound
The film pairs frank conversations with humor, music, and sound effects. That mix matters: the women are presented as people with wit, relationships, and distinct personalities, not only as examples of social hardship. The trailer offers a glimpse of this tone, though it cannot convey the full shape of a feature-length documentary.

Who made Kokomo City, and why?
D. Smith is a filmmaker and musician who directed the documentary after deciding to tell a story she felt was rarely represented publicly. In her Sundance interview, she explained that her own experience of being rejected for being transgender helped inspire the film. Her stated aim was to let the women speak freely and to make a creative, sometimes lighthearted film that would challenge a cliché view of trans women.
Smith’s approach places the participants’ perspectives at the center rather than treating them as a subject to be explained from a distance. The film’s combination of intimacy and visual stylization reflects that intent.

Koko Da Doll and the film’s context
Koko Da Doll was killed in Atlanta in April 2023, after the film’s Sundance premiere. Smith’s filmmaker statement says the loss made the project feel more urgent. Koko’s death is part of the documentary’s context, but it should not eclipse her presence in the film or reduce her contribution to the circumstances of her death. Smith’s filmmaker statement describes her response and the project’s aims.
