Yes—Kodi 21 “Omega” was a meaningful major release, even though it did not radically redesign the home screen. Kodi 21.0, released on April 6, 2024, moved to FFmpeg 6, improved Dolby Vision handling on some Android devices, introduced native macOS windowing and LG webOS support, modernized add-on infrastructure, and strengthened database and platform maintenance. The current Omega branch is Kodi 21.3, released in December 2025, so a new installation should use the latest 21.x build available for your platform rather than the original 21.0 package.
The short version
Kodi 21 is the successor to Kodi 20 “Nexus.” “Omega” is the codename for the release, not a separate application. Kodi is a free, open-source media-center program maintained by the Kodi Foundation; it does not itself provide subscription television or movies. Your content comes from local files, network shares, supported services, or separately installed add-ons.
The biggest changes are technical and platform-focused rather than cosmetic. FFmpeg 6 improves the media foundation, Android users get conversion support for some difficult Dolby Vision profiles, macOS uses native windowing, LG webOS gained a Kodi port, and game users get a controller-port viewer. Later 21.x releases fixed practical issues involving HDR, Blu-ray, subtitles, rescans, networking, PVR and add-on updates.
If you are on Kodi 20 or older, upgrading is generally worthwhile after a backup and an add-on/skin check. If your setup depends on an abandoned skin, unofficial add-ons or a heavily customized build, prepare and test first.

What Kodi 21.0 added
FFmpeg 6: a foundation upgrade, not a new menu
Kodi 21 moved to FFmpeg 6, the media framework used for substantial parts of audio and video processing. You will not see an “FFmpeg” button in the interface, and it does not guarantee better picture quality for every file. Its value is broader format compatibility, current maintenance and fixes that can interact with hardware acceleration, codecs, drivers and the media itself.
In practice, one system may show fewer playback problems while another shows little visible difference. The benefit is a more current playback foundation on which later fixes and platform work can build. Kodi’s 21.0 announcement describes this as part of Omega’s extensive under-the-hood work.
Dolby Vision profile conversion on Android
Omega can convert some Dolby Vision profiles on the fly when an Android device or display pipeline does not handle those profiles directly. This is useful for particular combinations of file, chipset, firmware and television.
It is not a universal Dolby Vision solution. Support still depends on the profile in the file, Android hardware and firmware, the television’s Dolby Vision implementation and the configured output path. A file that works on one Android TV box may fail, fall back to HDR or play differently on another.

Native macOS windowing
Kodi removed the remaining SDL-based window-display implementation on macOS in favor of native windowing. That aligns Kodi more closely with macOS window behavior and provides a better foundation for display, HiDPI and platform integration. It is an architectural improvement, not necessarily a dramatic visual change on every Mac.
Native Kodi support for LG webOS
Omega introduced a Kodi port for LG webOS televisions. That is a significant platform milestone, but it does not mean every LG model has identical installation or feature support. Availability can vary with the television model, webOS version, regional store policy and distribution route. Use Kodi’s official download and platform information rather than third-party APK or “build” sites.
A clearer controller view for games
The new in-game Player Viewer shows which game-port assignment each player’s controller is using. It is a focused improvement for Kodi’s game and emulator features, not a wholesale gaming redesign.
Changes most users will not see
Kodi says much of Omega’s work is invisible in the interface. The release includes Python and binary add-on API evolution, new skinning capabilities, updated third-party dependencies, static-analysis fixes, and database-migration improvements intended to make upgrades safer and more reliable. Those changes matter because a media center can become more stable and easier to maintain without looking different on the home screen.

What changed in Kodi 21.1, 21.2 and 21.3?
The later releases are maintenance updates, not a second wave of major Omega features. They are important because the best current experience is the latest 21.x build available for your device.
| Version | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 21.0 | April 6, 2024 | Major Omega release: FFmpeg 6, Android Dolby Vision conversion for some profiles, native macOS windowing, LG webOS, controller viewer and broad API/dependency work. |
| 21.1 | August 18, 2024 | Point release focused on fixes and platform maintenance rather than a new feature set. |
| 21.2 | January 19, 2025 | Bug-fix release covering library performance, UPnP playback, Android controls and resume behavior, Linux memory/DRM/scaling/windowing, translations, binary add-ons and some Windows 11 24H2 HDR cases. |
| 21.3 | December 2025 | Current Omega release as of August 18, 2026. Kodi’s article is dated December 16, while the Kodi Wiki table records December 13; both identify the same 21.3 release. |
Why 21.2 matters
Kodi 21.2 worked to restore movie-addition performance toward Kodi 20 levels and improved playback from some UPnP servers. It also addressed Android joystick and playback-resume problems, Linux memory, DRM, scaling and windowing issues, updated translations and backported binary add-on fixes. Some Windows 11 24H2 HDR situations were corrected.
Kodi also documented Windows crashes after the update and pointed affected users toward updating the Visual C++ runtime. That was a historical edge case, not a universal 21.2 failure. See the 21.2 release announcement for the affected scenarios.
Why 21.3 matters
The latest Omega maintenance release adds HDR support on Xbox One, fixes Blu-ray playback on Linux, Blu-ray resume audio and subtitle problems, HDR10 light-metadata changes, and subtitle selection for two-letter ISO 639-1 language codes. It also improves video-library rescans, prevents some multi-episode files from overwriting the first episode, and fixes Movie Versions detection and information dialogs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add-ons and skins: the main upgrade risk
A Kodi 20 add-on or skin is not automatically compatible with Kodi 21. Kodi’s official repository treats Omega 21.x as an active target, and new official-repository submissions have been Python 3-only since April 2024. That favors maintained add-ons, but it cannot repair an abandoned project, retired dependency or unofficial repository.
Kodi warned at the 21.0 launch that alternative skins might not yet have been updated. A skin can fail because of changed APIs, missing dependencies or obsolete code even when Kodi itself is working correctly.
- Officially maintained add-ons targeting Omega are the safest option.
- Unmaintained skins and third-party “builds” deserve a backup and a test before replacement.
- An add-on’s presence in a random repository is not proof that it is safe or compatible.
The official add-on submission policy explains the Omega target and Python requirements.

Platform and distribution caveats
Android and Google Play
Store availability can lag behind Kodi’s direct release because of processing, staged rollout, device architecture and regional policies. Kodi reported additional Google Play complications for the Android 21.3 build involving Google’s requirement for 16 KB memory-page support on 64-bit devices. That is a distribution constraint, not evidence that Kodi 21.3 is inherently unsafe.
If 21.3 is not visible on your device, check the official Kodi channel for that platform and avoid random APK sites. Do not assume that a package built for one Android TV device is appropriate for another.
Windows, macOS and Linux
Feature behavior depends on drivers, display hardware, windowing systems and acceleration paths. Omega’s macOS windowing change and the Linux fixes in 21.2 and 21.3 can matter greatly to an affected user, while another installation may see no obvious difference.
Raspberry Pi, Xbox, webOS and Apple platforms
These platforms do not receive identical builds or identical capabilities. HDR, Dolby Vision, CEC, codec acceleration, app-store timing and peripheral support remain device- and firmware-dependent. Check the official Kodi download channel for your exact platform before assuming that a feature listed for Android or webOS applies elsewhere.
How to upgrade without losing your setup
- Record your current version and add-ons. Note the skin, repositories, scrapers, databases and remote-control integrations you rely on.
- Back up Kodi’s userdata/profile directory. Kodi specifically recommends this before a major-version upgrade. The location differs by operating system, so use the official platform documentation rather than copying a path from another device.
- Update or remove unsupported skins and add-ons first. If your skin is unmaintained, switch to the default Estuary skin before installing Omega.
- Install the latest official 21.x package available for your platform. Prefer Kodi’s official download channel or a recognized platform store.
- Restart Kodi and test the essentials. Check video playback, HDR or Dolby Vision where relevant, library scans, subtitles, network shares, remotes, PVR and your critical add-ons.
- Recover methodically if something fails. Switch to Estuary, update or disable the offending add-on, and restore the userdata backup if the database or configuration is damaged.
Should you upgrade to Kodi 21?
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Kodi 20 with maintained official add-ons | Upgrade after backing up; use the latest 21.x build available. |
| Kodi 19 or older | Upgrade, but audit add-ons, skins and dependencies first. |
| Heavily customized build or valuable library database | Back up and test on a separate installation or device before replacing the working setup. |
| Android user waiting for a store package | Check official availability for the exact device; do not substitute a random APK. |
| Dolby Vision user | Upgrade with realistic expectations: Omega helps some Android profile/device combinations, not every Dolby Vision chain. |
| Already on an early Kodi 21 build | Move to the latest official 21.x maintenance release available for your platform. |
Verdict
Kodi 21 Omega is best understood as a broad playback, platform and maintenance modernization rather than a flashy interface redesign. FFmpeg 6, selected Android Dolby Vision conversion, native macOS windowing, LG webOS support and improved add-on infrastructure make 21.0 a genuine major release. The later 21.2 and 21.3 fixes make the current branch more practical for HDR, Blu-ray, subtitles, rescans, networking and platform stability. For most Kodi 20-or-earlier users, the upgrade is worthwhile—provided you back up first and treat skins, add-ons, hardware and app-store distribution as part of the compatibility decision.
