Kobe Bryant attended Bala Cynwyd Junior High School and Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lower Merion in 1996 and went directly into the NBA draft instead of enrolling in college, so there were no college years to uncover.
Where did Kobe Bryant go to school?
Bryant’s documented schooling before his professional career was in Pennsylvania. After spending much of his childhood in Italy, where his father played professional basketball, he returned to the Philadelphia area and attended Bala Cynwyd Junior High School. The 1999 Biography Today profile places the family’s return in 1991 and says Bryant moved to Lower Merion High School in 1993. The NBA identifies Lower Merion as the last school he attended before entering the league.
| Period | School or milestone | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| After returning to Pennsylvania | Bala Cynwyd Junior High School | The 1999 profile says he attended the school after his family returned from Italy. |
| 1993–1996 | Lower Merion High School | The 1999 profile dates his move there to 1993; it reports that he graduated in 1996. |
| After high school | No college enrollment documented | Bryant declared for the 1996 NBA draft rather than attending college. |
The chronology is clear, but the sources do not provide a detailed academic record: grades, coursework, or a complete transcript are not established.
What did Bryant accomplish at Lower Merion?
Bryant’s best-documented high-school achievements are basketball accomplishments. In his senior season, he led Lower Merion to Pennsylvania’s Class AAAA state championship. NBA.com’s 2020 retrospective reports that he earned Gatorade and Naismith national high-school player awards, appeared in the McDonald’s All-American Game, and scored 2,833 points in his high-school career. NBA.com described that total as the Southeastern Pennsylvania scoring record at the time.

Those honors document his performance on the court; they should not be mistaken for evidence about his grades or academic standing.
Did Kobe Bryant go to college?
No. After graduating from Lower Merion in 1996, Bryant declared for the NBA draft. NBA.com says he briefly considered college but chose the NBA over Duke or North Carolina. He did not attend either university, and the documented path is high school straight to professional basketball.

Why did he skip college?
Bryant’s own explanation, published in the April 1999 Biography Today profile, was that he wanted to compete against the best basketball players in the world. He also wanted the chance to face stars he admired, including Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Hakeem Olajuwon, while they were still playing.
That was a basketball decision, not evidence of an academic judgment. The available accounts describe his motivation to reach the NBA; they do not establish a separate reason related to his schooling.

How did high school lead to the NBA?
Charlotte selected Bryant with the 13th pick in the first round of the 1996 NBA draft. The NBA’s retrospective and its player profile describe the prearranged transaction that sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers. NBA.com also characterizes him as the first guard to join the preps-to-pros movement in 1996—not the first high-school player overall to enter the NBA.
The phrase “college years” can therefore be misleading in a biography of Bryant: the record documents his high-school years and his decision to bypass college, rather than any period of college enrollment.
