Knives Out 3 plot: What is Wake Up Dead Man about?
Benoit Blanc travels to a small church in upstate New York after an apparently impossible murder. Father Jud Duplenticy, a young priest sent to assist Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, disagrees with Wicks over their views of faith. When Wicks dies during a Good Friday service, suspicion falls on Jud, and police chief Geraldine Scott asks Blanc to investigate. Netflix’s official Media Center logline calls it Blanc’s “most dangerous case yet.”

That is the confirmed premise, not the solution: the setup makes Jud a suspect and puts Blanc against a seemingly impossible crime, but revealing more would spoil the mystery. Netflix’s December 12 feature presents the case as one that challenges Blanc.

How this mystery differs from the earlier Knives Out films
The first film centered on a New England mansion and a family’s greed; Glass Onion moved the mystery to a Greek island amid tech excess. Wake Up Dead Man turns to a church community and questions of belief, guilt, morality and human fallibility. Netflix describes the movie as gothic and grounded, with Jud carrying his own stakes alongside Blanc’s investigation.
Its mystery also draws on the locked-door and impossible-crime tradition associated with writer John Dickson Carr. In Netflix’s September 2025 interview feature, writer-director Rian Johnson calls the story “a side alley of the whodunnit genre: the impossible crime.” He compares its construction to a Margherita pizza: a simple form that leaves little to hide behind. Craig, meanwhile, says Johnson’s films “subvert the genre.” Those influences suggest a more classic puzzle structure, while the church setting gives the film a distinct moral and spiritual frame.
